| Rush – The Fountain Of Lamneth Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Like most Rush songs, this one has many layers of meaning and can be interpreted in nearly an infinate amount of ways. But its quite clear that the song is most clearly and simply describing the journey through life, but more specifically the evolution of an idividual's consciousness as one journeys through life. I dont doubt that the song also alludes to the phychedelic drug experience and the occurance of ego death as much as I dont doubt that the band were likely frequent users of psychedelic drugs themselves. Rush is a very intelligent and spiritual band and what I think initially inspired this song was a poweful, life-altering LSD experience(s) leading to ego death- although the song itself is not specifically about that experience. I think the band understood that the ultimate experience in human life is the phenomena of ego death, and they understood that there are many ways a person can bring about that experience, but by far the easiest way is to drop some acid, its a "short-cut" if you will. What i think gives away the allusion to drug-taking the most is the fact that the song describes a peak of an experience then a return to normal circumstances, a "return to reality" or a return to everyday, normal consciousness. This is not characteristic of an ego-death or "enlightenment" experience brought on my mere normal circumstances- which typically drastically alters the person for the remainder of life, leaving them a permanently enlightened individual. The song however, describes a temporary experience that leaves the subject having learned much, yet placed in a state of somewhat melancholic awe and wonder at life and yearning to re-capture that mental stae permanently- a mental state typical of the aftermath of a phychedelic drug experience. | |
