Well when I listen to this song - being from Australia I can tell you the following: The first verse is about how he arrived in the 80's The second makes reference to the fact that most of the early settlers were convicts... 'crooked friend' and how far it was... not just in distance but also in terms of lifestyle for the then pioneers. The third verse is about how safe we feel here as we have never been invaded, but by the same measure we have fought overseas and sacrificed our men and women abroad... making reference to the ANZAC spirit that we all have installed in us here in Oz; that we are an island; a secret amongst the world and that we are somewhat like america.... but without the guns and crime that they have...the real land of the free. Having said that - these are my hearfelt connections to this song... and it's probably the fourth time I've heard it. |
