When i saw him live the 2nd time he announced "Now here's a song about fucking!" So i think it's about sex or losing one's virginity. The times right and they've tried before but maybe she (or he) chickened out. I don't wanna save my soul, maybe it's pre-marriage and he's like "I don't care that we're not married i wanna have sex with you!" I wanna lose control and i wanna learn the best way to do it, even if it takes a lifetime! All of that makes sense, but other parts of the song are still grey to me. But just though I'd share what i thought. |

Well as with many of Devin's songs it doesn't make much sense on the surface but the repeating of the "chorus" building up and changing definitely stick out. "They laughed at me but we never bothered My friends and I There were no others" Well this is showing that all you need is your friends to get you through anything. People making fun of him and laughing at him, but they never bothered about it. "My friends were there but they never bothered Now there's you and I and There are no others" Well here's a stipulation from the original, now his friends see him but they don't help him. Perhaps he has gone through a change, or is dealing in things his friends don't want him to. So now it's just him and his new "habit" or "friend" representing "I" "My friends have come and I never bothered Myself and I There is no other" Now it seems that his friends have come back later down the road and are wanting to help him now, but now he doesn't bother to accept their help because they weren't there in his time of need. Referring to, "Don't die on me Don't go away When I need you here In my need" This is showing possibly a breakdown where he needs someone badly but no one is there for him. He drove his friends away and now he sees that was his biggest mistake. Later his friends will come back, but it will be too late. Think in terms of a dramatic musical play. The grand death scene comes and it's musical, the music plays and he passes away. Of course this is what i see sticking out on the surface, and I'm probably crazy, but this is one of (if not) the greatest songs of all time. And Dev is the coolest cat ever. |
