Laura Marling – Alas, I Cannot Swim Lyrics 13 years ago
The song holds several different meanings, and was meant to sum up the whole album. The first part describes how she has speant her life missing out on good things due to petty fears that hold her back. Then, she describes her inability to connect with people and how it will effect her relationship with a boy she really does love. I think that "There's a life across the river that was meant for me, instead I live my life in constant misery" talks about how an abusive relationship has taken control of her entire life, even after it is over. She will live out days looking over her shoulder, wishing she had had the bravery and maturity to escape while she could, but "alas i cannot swim." THEN, she goes on to describe the want of simplicity, and how one day, and what seems very soon, she will overcome all things holding her back. Alas I cannot swim holds many meaning thorugh just one song.
