OK, well first up, I may go into something totally unrelated to the actual song meaning here, but its just my interpretation :) Anyway, I find that Steve Wilson writes mostly about stories with Porcupine Tree, but this album stupid dream was about his earlier life (well at least that's what i think), but this song makes me wonder about this, because it seems more like a story to me. The song seems to me like the character or Steve was in a relationship that he didn't enjoy and they got in a fight and broke up, then he waits for the perfect lover for him/her and eventually, depending on my mood, finds one or doesn't (ill get to that later). Now, the best way to explain my interpretation is probably through the lyrics... Stranded here on planet earth (stuck in a bad relation ship) It's not much but it could be worse (this line seems a bit sad. when he says it could be worse, it sounds like hes relating it to a past relationship hes had, but that could just be me...) Everything's free here, there's no crowds (the partner is really rich or has a lot of connections and that's probably the reason they chose them in the first place) Winter lasted five long years (now this is getting to the fight. however, I'm not sure if he means the fight lasted a long time or the relationship lasted five years) No sun will come again I fear (they will not feel happiness again) Chemical harvest was sown (not to sure about this line...) And I will wait for you (he/she is holding on to every last piece of hope that there might be the perfect person out there for them, and will not stop searching till they find each other) Until the sky is blue (they will be happy again) And I will wait for you (same again) What else can I do? (pretty self explanatory...) A spaceship from another star (meets another person that they show an interest in) They ask me where all the people are (they ask where their lover is) What can I tell them? (yeah...) I tell them I'm the only one (he/she tells them there is nobody else) There was a war but I must have won (talking about the fight they had) Please take me with you. (asks to be in a relationship with the person they just met sorta thing) obviously the chorus is the same again, but the ending I really like. It could just be a coincidence but knowing Steve, I doubt it. I still haven't fully figured it out for myself though, so don't go giving me shit about it. Now, when the solo plays, the drums and bass and stuff eventually fades out and it is left with a little sad guitar bit playing and then turns into a almost scary sort of electronic part. To me this means that the character never really found the perfect person and died alone after a very sad and lonely life. Also, I'm not to sure about this part because I just realized it this morning, but when the solo fades out, there is actually a background guitar playing still with the solo guitar before the scary music comes in. This could mean that he or she eventually does find the perfect person and they live life together and die a sad death or something of the sort. I am not 100% on this and its only my interpretation. It has to be one of the greatest PT songs and probably one of my favorite they have written. Steve Wilson says that he writes his music with a meaning to himself, but also in such a way that it has multiple meanings and that people listening to it could adapt it into their own lives and make it more of a personal song to them. so don't go giving me hate for this, cuz frankly, i couldn't care less :) |

seems like a song about being wipped... for example You keep me alone in a room full of friends its how his girlfriend keeps him from his friends and wants him all to herself and when he says You have me on my knees it could mean how he is almost his girlfriends servant and does as she says, when she says sorta thing sorry for my shit explanation, just my opinion |
