| i can understand how this song might be about coming out of a relationship that dragged the narrator down. in my own opinion, i think it could also just be about someone who was lost and found their way out again. i agree with andycarnage that god is the "good old friend" that dragged him out of the mire of earthly things. i think the girl the narrator looks back to could be someone he loved and pulled him down into the mire; or she might just be someone he knew and cared about (not necessarily romantically) who is still stuck. at any rate, everyone's comments are interesting and made me think about the song a lot more. | |
