I have a different interpretation of this song entirely. I will analyze it and offer my opinion verse by verse. "They shot a movie once, in my hometown everybody was in it, from miles around out at the speedway, some kind of Elvis thing well I ain't no movie star but I can get behind anything yeah I can get behind anything" I think that this verse is a man explaining that a movie was made in his hometown at a speedway involving Elvis somehow. It seems to me that everyone interprets the line, "I can get behind anything" as meaning support anything but I`ve always thought it meant I can get behind the wheel of anything. My reasoning; the person speaking is saying "I ain`t no movie star but I can get behind anything" and it`s already been established that they are at a speedway, suggesting despite his lack of acting skills, the speaker can perform very well in a driving scene. "Get it out, get it all out yeah stretch that thing make it last, make it last at least until the supper bell rings well the taxi driver likes his rhythm never likes the stops throes of passion, throes of passion when something just threw him off" I think the speaker changes in this line and it is now from the perspective of a child (a young boy most likely) hence the line "At least until the supper bell rings". The child is at the speedway watching the speaker from the first verse, a taxi driver who is doing the driving scene(s) and telling him to "Make it last and get it all out", meaning push it to it`s limit for the entertainment of those watching until they have to leave, "At least until the supper bell rings". The line "Something just threw him off" I think refers to the driver/speaker #1 being distracted from his driving by a girl he sees at the speedway. "Sometimes the faster it gets the less you need to know but you gotta remember the smarter it gets the further its gonna go when you blow at high dough when you blow at high dough" The chorus is saying sometimes when you are going really fast in life you can get by on less information but you will go further if you slow down and take time to gather that information. This is a really neat chorus because IMO it is refering to the technique of driving in the film. "Faster it gets the less ypu need to know" the less you need to know about how to drive well, "But the smarter it gets the further it`s gonna go", the better driver you are the better you will do, suggesting that the chorus is speaker #1 again, or perhaps both speakers share that philosophy. "Baby I feel fine I'm pretty sure it's genuine it makes no sense, no it makes no sense but I'll take it free anytime whoever fits her usually gets her it was the strangest thing how she moved so fast, moved so fast into that wedding ring" The final verse refers to the girl that distracted the driver. He is telling her or the original audience of the song that he feels great but doesn`t know why although he isn`t questioning it, "I`ll take it free anytime". The line "Whoever fits her usually gets her" is saying that whoever suits this girl can get her. The line "It was the strangest thing how she moved so fast into that wedding ring" is expresssing the speaker`s astonishment at how this girl is willing to marry whoever "fits her" bill. I apologize for the length of this analysis btw :) |

I think this song is someone explaining fighting with their girlfriend. He is saying, I don`t bow out or give in because I think your right but because I don`t want to fight. Some lines suggest how quickly things change after a fight, how quickly they go back to normal, such as: "It`s all so subway-grim and then it`s gone". The end of the song describes how the couple go to bed angry with each other; "We lay down seething and smell our pillows burn and drift off to a place where you`d think we`d learn". This also describes how they dream of being happy all the time like they probably once were, the singer is saying you would think we`d stop fighting when we dream about happy times but we don`t. |
