John Mayer – Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967 Lyrics 12 years ago
I know it has been a year since you wrote these thoughts, and I am not sure if you will ever see this. But, I found your story to be very inspiring. This album "dropped" (as they say) the month that marked the worst year in my own life. I listened to Walt Grace two weeks before I was supposed to relocate to Roseville, CA after finishing grad school in Oklahoma. I found refuge in this story then. I found out two weeks before I was supposed to leave that I wasn't going to be graduating on time. When I told the company, they retracted the offer as it it was a requirement for the position. Since, I have also scraped and worked my way back up to finishing school and am starting the job of my dreams in a month. I haven't had the courage to listen to Walt Grace over this year as my association was what it was. I am now letting myself fall in love with it even more than I did this time last year. Good luck to you in all of your endeavors.

John Mayer – Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967 Lyrics 13 years ago
The first thing thing I thought upon truly listening to these lyrics is "Taking on Water" - a track by John Mayer that was never released and he only played a live several times.

I think it hits on the same theme of being unsatisfied and hoping for more; dreaming of more. Then pushing off to "sea" hoping merely on a sail or, in this case, a homemade submarine looking for more.

I agree with one of the previous couple of posts that this is quickly going up on the list of the most relatable songs he has. Nothing compares to breaking out of a comfort zone in the name of avoiding mediocrity. The line, "Now his friends bring him up when they're drinking" really hit home for me. Sometimes I think that's all of us ever really want - to be remembered.
