I hate this song. I don't see how anything can see it as positive. Like "Pumped Up Kicks" it is so upbeat sounding but has such a revolting message: Give me a second I, I need to get my story straight (I need a moment to get my lines and excuses together) My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State (This is a great time to act, while my friends, whose opinion I actually care about, are distracted and can't see me humbling myself) My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar, and I know I gave it to you months ago I know you're trying to forget (I beat you badly enough months ago to give you a scar, but I still consider you my girlfriend and deep down I know you do, too.) But between the drinks and subtle things The holes in my apologies, you know I'm trying hard to take it back (Honest, I may sound like a pathetic bastard--good thing my friends can't hear--but I'm REAL sorry, even though we both know I'd probably do it again eventually) So if by the time the bar closes And you feel like falling down, I'll carry you home (And if your self esteem is low enough by the time the bark closes, I still might get laid tonight) Tonight, we are young So let's set the world on fire We can burn brighter than the sun (Yeah, we're kids so we can pretend our actions don't have consequences, and we can pretend we don't know better. Nothing we do is for keeps anyway -- conveniently forgetting scars) Now I know that I'm not All that you got, I guess that I, I just thought Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart But our friends are back So let's raise a cup 'Cause I found someone to carry me home (I know realistically if I back off you could do a lot better than me, but I'm here and luckily I got all my lines out before the guys got back, so my rep is still intact, and it looks like you're caving and I'm getting laid tonight--those guys will be so impressed that even after what I did to you you're still coming back to me, am I a stud or what?) Tonight, we are young So let's set the world on fire We can burn brighter than the sun Tonight, we are young So let's set the world on fire We can burn brighter than the sun Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na) Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na) Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na) Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na) The world is on my side I have no reason to run So will someone come and carry me home tonight The angels never arrived But I can hear the choir So will someone come and carry me home (oh yeah, I'm gettin laid alright!) Tonight, we are young So let's set the world on fire We can burn brighter than the sun Tonight, we are young So let's set the world on fire We can burn brighter than the sun So if by the time the bar closes And you feel like falling down I'll carry you home tonight (So if by the time the bar closes you have no self respect, I'm definitely getting laid tonight) |

| Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I love how this song shows two sides of the breakup. The guy from the get go felt that there was something missing, but didn't really let on that this was a chronic state for him and that he really didn't think they had a future. The girl felt totally fulfilled by him and guilty that he wasn't getting the same out of it, feeling like somehow it was her fault, that he was blaming her for his being unhappy. When she realized that all this time he'd been hiding his disconnect, the whole thing must have felt like a sham to her. The kind of love she thought he had for her was never there, and it made her feel used and foolish, and she wanted to distance herself from the situation. He didn't mean it as a charade, though. He really wanted it to be love and considers it unfair of her to punish him for not being able to connect better. He doesn't like being made out to be the bad guy any more than she did. | |
