The Beatles – Cry for a Shadow Lyrics 13 years ago
The only original Beatles song to come out of their Hamburg days. John and George tongue in cheek instrumental that was even named after British band The Shadows who had many instrumental hit records in the early sixties. Like Ray Charles "What I'd Say", "Cry For A Shadow" could be lengthened or shortened depending how drunk an audience was. Had it not been for Bert Kaempfert's Polydor release this could well have disappeared in the same way as "In Spite of All Danger" had.

The Beatles – We Can Work It Out Lyrics 13 years ago
It's difficult to know what Paul's relationship with Jane Asher was like up close but the Rubber Soul sessions make it pretty clear it was heading for troubled waters by 1965. Jane was a successful actress working with the RSC and Paul was a red blooded male flying around the world as a Beatle. Paul wanted a stay at home wife but Jane went to join the Bristol Old Vic. "We Can Work It Out" is certainly a plea from the heart. John was on hand to give his friend a verse written from the heart.

The Beatles – How Do You Do It Lyrics 13 years ago
Gerry Marsden should get down on bended knees and thank The Beatles for their interpretation of this Mitch Murray song. Murray intended this to be sang in the skip-a-long style favoured by Adam Faith at the time. Gerry wisely followed The Beatles version and got himself a number one. George Martin deserves massive credit for sticking with John and Paul.

The Beatles – Free as a Bird Lyrics 13 years ago
From what I understand John wrote this song for a musical about his and Yoko's life called unsurprisingly "The Ballad of John & Yoko." This song represented, ironically, him celebrating the break up of The Beatles. As much Paul and George were satisfied about the released version and don't think John would have approved. John didn't rate George as an equal as either songwriter or singer so he appearance would be limited to third vocalist. Even Paul's lyrics for this version would be too maudlin for John;s taste.

The Beatles – You've Got to Hide Your Love Away Lyrics 13 years ago
It's quite possible, under the influence of Bob Dylan, John simply used this song to write from a different perspective. Hanging around with Brian Epstein gave John a chance to see up close how lonely and empty Brian's life was and that certainly goes to the heart of the lyrics. Of course The Beatles would never record a song from the male perspective they simply changed the "he's" to "she's".

The Beatles – Savoy Truffle Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm baffled why George decided to keep this song on the White Album, at the expence of the superior 'Not Guilty'. Along with 'I Me Mine' possibly George's worst Beatles tracks. He so many better material from this period he could have used.

The Beatles – Baby's in Black Lyrics 13 years ago
I do think it is about Astrid Kirchher mourning for Stuart Sutcliffe but it's also John's inability to express his grief for his dead friend. John's way was to act tough and not talk about his feelings.

The Beatles – Another Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
The upbeat nature of this song hides the fact that it's a pretty cruel song and Paul is pulling no punches by telling Jane Asher he is moving on to someone new. "You're making me say that I've somebody that's new". It is now common knowledge that Paul had least two other serious girlfriend's in 1965 while Jane was away on acting jobs. But of course this wasn't the end of Paul and Jane's relationship instead it inspired much of his songwriting on both "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver".

The Beatles – Child of Nature Lyrics 13 years ago
If John wrote this alone and then chooses to re-write then it has nothing to do with Paul. By 1968 John and Paul were little more than a sounding board for each others songs. A verse here, a chorus there or perhaps just a line altered.

The Beatles – And Your Bird Can Sing Lyrics 13 years ago
John dropped the humorous but more cutting line "when you're bike is broken will it get you down", which can be heard on [take 2]. Possibly Mick felt offended.

The Beatles – You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) Lyrics 13 years ago
John originally wanted to release this song as the "B" side of "What;s the New Mary Jane" under the banner of the Plastic Ono Band. Due to legal complications regarding remaining The Beatles input on both songs it was a non starter. It was quite John was intentionally looking for conflict with the other three.

The Beatles – Your Mother Should Know Lyrics 13 years ago
By all accounts this song was written by Paul for the BBC programme "Our World". It certainly fills everything about the brief, a simple song with a catchy tune. Sorry Paul, but John just did it a lot better when he wrote "All You Need is Love".

The Beatles – You Won't See Me Lyrics 13 years ago
This is completely wrong. The title of the song is "You Won't See Me" yet the lyric above is for "Tell Me What You See"

The Beatles – You're Going to Lose That Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is John's little dig in Paul's direction regarding his treatment of Jane Asher. Brought up by his Aunt Mimi, John had a very conservative background famously marrying Cynthia when she became pregnant. Someone like Jane Asher would have been a girl he believed Paul should aspire to. Instead Paul used to get himself invited to judge beauty contests with himself as the first prize, and he since admitted, John disapproved.

The Beatles – Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Lyrics 13 years ago
John is using the same songwriting trick that Bob Dylan used on "Just Like a Woman". The line "We married/She's my friend" actually refers to two different women. John similarly writes "She said that she worked in the morning and started to laugh/ I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath". Again the first line refers to the woman in the song the second to wife Cynthia.

The Beatles – Taxman Lyrics 13 years ago
It's shame that this is the song John and George fell out over in George's book "I Me Mine". John claimed he wrote some of the words to "Taxman" and George never gave him any credit for helping him. John was also angry that George mentioned every obscure musician who influenced him as a songwriter but never mentioned himself or Paul. John and Paul may not have been that helpful to George's songs but they gave him the best lessons ever on the art of songwriting.

The Beatles – The Ballad of John and Yoko Lyrics 13 years ago
George left because during the "Let It Be" because John was behaviour insufferable. John and Paul wasted an entire Friday afternoon fooling around instead or rehearsing and when the group returned on the Monday George could this session was going nowhere either. George didn't tell anyone to fuck off he just announced he was quitting. The clip about Paul telling George how to play a certain way was not even edited about the right song. The film implies it's the "I've Got a Feeling" but was actually the "Two of Us".

The Monkees – Randy Scouse Git Lyrics 13 years ago
Micky Dolenz picked up the song title "Randy Scouse Git" from a insult used by Alf Garnett in the BBC sitcom "Til Death Do Us Part". Unfortunately he little idea what it meant but was asked by his record company in the UK to find an alternate title because it would offend in the country. He either couldn't or couldn't be bothered to come up with a new name for the song and eventually the alternate title stuck. "Til Death Do Us Part" was later re-made in the USA as "Keep It in the Family"

The Beatles – Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Lyrics 13 years ago
It is about an affair John and the clue to woman's identity is the line "She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh." Implying that the woman found it funny that she had to get up in the morning to work but actually worked an evening newspaper. Cynthia possibly knew something might be going but John copped out telling her by saying he slept in the bath. John couldn't figure how to finish the song so Paul gave him the idea of setting the house on fire. Actually the only part of the song that wasn't true.
