I think you both are right in what you say, missing just one thing. He is dead, he is singing from death to her, who is alive and everyday comes to the blackfield to talk to him. Its an amazing song, with great message... not only refering to a lost love, but also can be refering at the future when steven will be dead and someone listens to this song.
