| Not in depth or anything, but for anyone unaware, this song is about "the great gatsby", written for the 2013 Baz Lurhmann film. | |

| Oh my god, Thank you DSM. I think sometimes we're all so overstimulated visually (with things like facebook staring back at us all the time...). I saw this video a dozen times, and my limited imagination could only see a confusing animated style, and I didn't understand it. Now I'm like...seriously? Ridiculously obvious symbolism went right over my head, lol. Thank you for helping me see the video! feeling more connected now. | |

| Also, pretty clear hint. Song is called "Hearts a Mess". Not "Your Heart's a mess". This is word play...whose heart? Plural hearts, all our hearts, theirs and yours. There's wisdom in this song. Gotye might actually be singing this to YOU. This song is about your heart, and he wants you to get it. | |

My opinion might be a little too biased right now. I only just discovered this song through the soundtrack to the 2013 film rendition of "The Great Gatsby". And in relationship to the film's story/characters, this song fits brilliantly. On first glance, this is just a sad romantic song about loving someone who won't open up. If you're a young romantic, I think its ok to see it as nothing more than that. But if you're a mature romantic, you've probably been through some intense shit and done some self reflection, and you can see why this song is not appropriate, it's a reflection of how we fuck up in love. If Gotye is intentionally wording his songs to be ironic (and I'm pretty sure he is...) then this song has a lot of depth. At least, I hope he is. Otherwise, we kind of need to look at this with the same creepy feelings we do with iconic 'Every Breath You Take - The Police'. In its era, hit single...now...beautiful sounding, but creepy chilling inappropriate stalker song. I'm pretty sure Gotye is aware...(he better be)...but I feel more certain when we compare to his break out hit... In "Somebody that I used to Know"...the pain is real, but the lyrics he chose reflect a selfish, manipulative emo boy. He doesn't say "I miss you, I loved you", he whines saying he doesn't really need her, that the breakup feels 'rough' (not unbearable, just uncomfortable), he thinks of her 'now and then', but mostly he's just hung up on how he didn't deserve to be dumped. In the end, we feel way more connected to Kimbra's persona, especially in the video, she's trying to reach him, she's trying to explain her needs, but he won't acknowledge/look at her, he's trapped in his own misery, and it's HIS doing. This leads me to believe the same applies to this song. This is about boundaries, how relationships need to be about giving willingly and not trying to force someone to open up. The valid part that we empathize with most is 'the desperation to connect'...that is something we all feel and need, and it is the one thing that leads us to depression, loneliness, despair, and unfortunately bitterness, transference, madness. Living beings, but especially humans, long for connection and understanding like nothing else, and when we can't achieve it, we experience heartbreak, the most painful feeling a person can feel (as musicians and artists have always, and will always bring to our attention). But this song is teaching us that projecting our needs and feelings on someone else is what makes us lonely. All you have to do is re-direct all the lyrics to the TELLER of the story, not the desired person. Change the pronouns...'My heart's a mess, I won't admit to it.' We can tell by the mood and tone of the song, the SINGER is the victim of a messy heart. Because when relationships start to fall apart, it's usually because we've become obsessed with, or plagued by the beliefs we've projected on them, the romantic story we've woven ourselves into. This doesn't happen in happy, healthy relationships. This happens in relationships where someone is mixed up in pride, expectations, arrogance, need, and objectifying a person rather than respecting them and letting them unfold who they are. This is begging someone to let down THEIR boundaries, this is pressure and force. If someone occupies your mind, that is your choice, and it is their choice to let you occupy theirs. Treating someone like a mess you can fix denies them the ability to not be seen as a mess in your eyes. If you want love to work, give a person a reason to trust you and commit to that trust, don't try to crawl into someone's heart if they haven't invited you. This is wrong, and I think Gotye is implying it indirectly, especially since sensitive romantic guys fall for this over and over again, trying to save hopelessly beautiful women from their plight, instead of simply experiencing them and honouring their choice to be in your company. If Gotye isn't implying this, and is still unaware of what he's singing, then we have a situation of very creepy, inappropriate song. And if you're mooning over someone in your life while listening to this, I highly suggest you do some soul searching and evaluation of what this song means to you. Because it isn't them, its you, and you have a mess to clean up. |

| The Decemberists – The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I hate to post some lame interpretation. I know my interpretation isn't what they were trying to suggest, but it's kind of trippy. The mother: "mother" earth. the son: a human. earth gave humanity everything, humanity kept wanting to the point of destruction. Earth: this is how you repay me? Human: i can't help it, i can't quench my thirst enough, i can't stop wanting, it comes in waves. I want the 'night' (The human race casts a shadow on the earth during its stay. dark pleasures, destruction, the deterioration of life in pursuit of earthly pleasure.) Earth: Fine. take the night. but i'll be killing you in the morning. |
