Janelle Monáe – March of the Wolfmasters Lyrics 13 years ago
lol. When they started saying "Anthony Greendown", I heard the part "Anthony Green-" and thought he was the one the robot was in love with.

But yeah, the song is pretty straightforward. It's an intro to the EP and story spanning this EP and her album. It's a good start. She's got a good voice that makes the person she is speaking as in this song believable. She sings good, too.

Family of the Year – Feel Good Track of Rosemead Lyrics 13 years ago
These are not the lyrics for "Feel Good Track of Rosemead". I'm listening to the song right now, and this is not it.

Family of the Year – St. Croix Lyrics 13 years ago
The song is pretty straight forward. It's about a boy who goes on a vacation to the Caribbean to get away from the stress of a everyday life (likely in the city) and a recently terminated relationship. He throws away his phone and laptop, as he feels that they only make his life worse and prevent him from enjoying his life at the fullest extent.

Circa Survive – Blank Slate Lyrics 13 years ago
The first verse seems to be telling the listener that if they can't decide on a choice, time will ultimately make the decision will make it for them and the person will always be stagnant. I think, with the lines about the final drop being all that is need to make the cup run over, they are trying to say that life is extremely fragile and it doesn't take much to put things out of balance.

The second verse seems to talk about how it is inevitable that we will all be swept away or burried by history, and many will put pressure on us to do certain things or fulfill their hopes for us, but we cannot allow ourselves to give into such things.

The final verse delves further into what the second verse spoke of. We must try to fulfill our own goals and dreams and not break under the pressure that society puts on those who are different. It then ends, saying that we shouldn't worry about the pressure society puts on us or the fact that history will crush us all, and so we should just enjoy our time while we have it. After all, "we all just wash away."

I really hope this is on the new album.

The Sound of Animals Fighting – Act I: Chasing Suns Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the line, "I was chasing suns across the circular path", is definitely a reference to the poem, "I saw a man pursuing the horizon" by Stephen Crane, since they also recite a poem by him on The Ocean and The Sun. I wouldn't put it past them to have a lot of influence from him.

According to the wiki article for this album, in the album's story, a captain's sons mutiny against him while they are carrying cargo that is fighting animals.

Using that knowledge, I think, in the song, after the captain jumps off the ship, his sons proceed to fight, like the animals below deck, over who should have authority, but the argument is futile, as each son wants the title of captain for himself. The captain was also tired of fending off his sons, so he jumped off to "join" the sun.

Owl City – Dementia Lyrics 13 years ago
I like the above interpretations, but for the sake of diversity, here's how I interpreted the song when I first heard it. (I interpreted it in a few ways.)

1.) The song seems to be narrated from the P.O.V. of someone who is in love with someone with dementia. Judging from the lines:

Big surprise, I'm a ghost keeping out of sight
Rub your eyes, you're a star in the summer night
This is love, this is war, it's insanity
Dementia, oh dementia

They sometimes feel like a ghost because their loved one has occasions where they don't recognize the narrator, or do not realize that the narrator is present at all. Sometimes, the narrator's loved one thinks that they are somewhere else, such as in outer space. Then there are the lines:

Through the skies you're en route at the speed of light
So realize this chaos in the air tonight
This is love, this is war, this is pure insanity
Dementia, you're driving me crazy

Often the narrator is frustrated with their loved one, but they are still confident that they truly love each other, and the narrator often tries to assist their loved one in discerning what is true and what is imagined.

2.) Another interpretation I made of the song is that it is actually from the point of view of someone with dementia, and they often think that they see a lover of their's who died years ago, but their lover could have just as easily moved away and not be dead. They themselves are unsure whether or not everything they see is true. What proves that their lover is likely dead are the lines:

Big surprise, I'm a ghost keeping out of sight
Rub your eyes, you're a star in the summer night
This is love, this is war, it's insanity
Dementia, oh dementia

The first line could refer to their loved one speaking rhetorically, saying they are indeed dead, or it could refer to the fact that the narrator feels like a ghost because they cannot interact with the illusion that is their lover. The second line refers to the fact that their lover is likely in Heaven. Despite this, the narrator is not sure about everything they see being imaginary or not.

I also think that the second stanza of the song is just a sort of run-through of their daily life and how they find it difficult to focus or discern truth from falsehood. Line about keeping pace may refer to them hoping they can maintain their focus long enough to do certain tasks or maintain a grip on reality, or it may refer to them hoping they can maintain a grip on the image of their loved one, either in their memory or in their sight. It could also mean that the narrator thinks that certain conditions can bring about the image of their loved one.

3.) This song may just be in the same vein as Swimming in Miami and be about you finding "your zone" where nothing else matters and just being blown away by your own thoughts.

Either way, this is a great song. The new album does seem to have some potential. I definitely agree, though, that the new sound is different; it took some getting used to.
