When you put: "In the evil heart/ In the evil soul", I always thought it was "In the eagle's eye/ In the evening sun" but I believe it's none of that now. I'll blow your MINDS Flows! I think what she says in the last line is "In the evensong." It basically means evening song and it's a type of prayer people sing in churches. This leads me to believe she says Evensong instead of "Even sum." This REVELATION has opened the song up so much for me, as the line "I'll be dead before the day is done" takes on a whole new meaning, and what I once thought was an angry song is actually more of a release. It's very similar to what she echoes throughout ceremonials, like in "shake it out", "breaking down", "leave my body" and sort of "lover to lover." Still trying to figure out some more lyrics I think we've all got wrong, but our own ones can be just as great anyway. |

I do agree with most people in here, that each versus and chorus shows a peregrination of her power, confidence and, for some, relationship. But to me, went comes to the versus "When we come back we'll be dressed in black..." I think it's a refection of when power and confidence gets too much, and saying things you don't mean: "And you'll scream our names aloud" I think showing that their is anger and upset, that they can't "illuminate" anymore and it hurts them, or that the other person is getting frustrated, like long relationships do: people take it out on each other. "And we won't eat and we won't sleep" Is almost showing that they are surviving themselves of their affections because of the argument. "We won't sleep" (oh dear, it there a problem in the, you know.) "We'll drag bodies from the ground" I always see as meaning the reverse of the "Shake it out" line "Bury that horse in the ground," meaning they are using things from their pasts to hurt one another. But it is a happy ending. The long pause after this verse maybe indicating to letting the dust settle, and when Florence sings the chorus again, she sings it in a soft and more 'sympathetic' tone, to me meaning she wants to say sorry, and that their is no one else for her in the world "aaaaaawwwwwww" |

| This is exactly what I used to think was the meaning too. Her songs have, as my english teacher would say, "lovely imagery." | |

I love reading everyone's own interpretations on this song. It's amazing! I love it so much, and I think this is the song that sealed my life in devotion to music of Florence and the machine. This is the only artist in the world that has made me feel so much while listening to their music. Not many other artists speak to me in this way and I really don't know where I would be or who I would be without her songs, and possibly this song on it's own. For me, it's the darkest songs on Lungs. At first, the song told me about being kept in the dark and untrustworthy people. That was what I fist though when I hear it the first time, but when I actually bought the album and started to listen to in again, it was different. Then I believed it was about death and how death can changes us and how we can never brings the the dead back to life. And then my opinion changed again, and I loved it more that anything. It was about untrustworthy people and death. But most of all, it was about growing up: the change from child to teenager. It tells the story of how death can sometimes force you to grow up and how growing it's your choice and you have no control. And in the case of this song, holding onto your childhood means you losing touch with the people around you, mainly your age. "It was you who held me under": Our parents. "All around the world was waking, I never could go back." keeping up with every other kid your age, leaving fairytales and games behind. "Because all the walls of dreaming, they were torn wide open, and finally seeing that the spell was broken." Innocence dies. |
