Calling this a "breakup song" might be reductive. My opinion isthat there's more inside these lyrics. There is a common thought that a man, to have more success with women, should act more as the "bad guy". And this thought often come over after the end of a relationship where is she who cheated on him or treated him bad. Well, the song is all about that. After a man has fallen in love with a woman, and she used him without any care for his feelings, he feels "crushed", "pulverized", "bereft". But in the aftermath, he becomes just like her, from now on he will use false words who "seems so alive" to "control and hypnotize" women and to be "on the outside the greatest guy". But this way he is just "dead inside" like the woman who left him "out in the cold". |

I have a different feeling about this song. I think that it's written from the point of view of a person who sees himself as a "spaceman" in the world of humans (referred as "they" in the song). Look at the first four lines: this is a birth, when we are ripped from our bed and our blood type is taken soon after. He is like a spaceman because he feels different from the others. At first he hoped to leave this world through dying, but when he was near this event (probably he underwent some surgery to save his life, "when they cut me open") he changed his mind. Then he closes himself in his own daydreams but people is always ready to call him back to reality ("they're calling me by my name"). Meanwhile, people is "zipping white light beams" while "disregarding bombs and satellites", and that makes them odd to his eyes. Even the "dream maker" and the "star maker" are odd to him. Then he decides to live his life trying to make people less odd, but people don't change ("they say that Nile used to run from east to west") or don't listen to him ("And the public don't dwell on my transmission cause it wasn't televised"). But in the end he is fine with this life, but the "voices at night" are just the voices of humans who are still awake during the night and make noises. And all those things "justify my claims" of people as odd beings. |
