I think this whole Clues album is a closure on the whole Unicorns existence and ending. I read an interview somewhere where alden stated that he felt he didn't have any closure on the band and I feel like many of the songs deal with this and the past. Expanding upon this: I feel like this is a cry out to Nick Thorburn (partner in Unicorns, Islands lead now) - I have seen the most incredible light In your eyes, in your eyes, in your eyes I have seen the most incredible light In your eyes, in your eyes, in your eyes (he has -past tense- seen how good Nick could be from when they were together in Unicorns.) So cast away all your pain Once lost treasure in your hands again You will rise into the flames (he's telling him to rid himself off the hate and how it ended with them and their reunion -lost treasure- would be their's again) And reclaim the name which sees you fit Into it, into it Little baby born out of fables Into ships, into ships Friends split (once together, they could reclaim the name -Unicorns- and make and send their songs out but also not ignoring the past that once they're in ships again -in business together - friends split.) So sail away on your dreams Unknown treasure in the hollow beams (so for now, Alden is telling him to go with this Islands thing - see what kind of value, if any out of these hollow beams/rewards) I never want to waste away They want to take my name away I never want to waste away They want me dead, don't end the day with them (here he's talking about how he made a stance to distance himself from these record companies/expectations - about how they suck out your soul and they own you. They won't support alden's releases/direction and he's warning for Nick to not stand with them) That's how they win They get you in the rain And you forget about your promise (he's telling him that they are convincing and get him in the rain -money,fame- and make you forget about making good, new music that's true to himself - perfect fit) They want to take your crown away 200 years in Ukraine I want to see my family I wear the past as a second skin (not sure about the 200 years in Ukraine fitting - but wanting to see his family is talking about the Unicorns family, him, Nick and Jamie - wearing the past as a second skin is saying that he hasn't forgotten about their past and he shows it.) Hey You are a bird of paradise Your songs are woven into life Then when we get you out of it I want to rise, to set alight the sky (last part- he compliments him and tells him how special his talent is and that when they convince/get him out of what he in now - they will reunite and Unicorns will rule again) Anyways - just my interpretation. |

I think this whole Clues album is a closure on the whole Unicorns existence and ending. I read an interview somewhere where alden stated that he felt he didn't have any closure on the band and I feel like many of the songs deal with this and the past. Expanding upon this - this song feels like he's addressing Nick Thorburn and giving him his "eyes" and"gone and gave my live to you" - their sound identity, past songs that can become new Island songs (Abominable SnowMan, Rough Gem, etc...) The whole "saw you leave your bike in the ocean, let your transport rust" thing is saying that he sees that Nick is still living and staying in the world that they created (sound wise) and not moving forward. Just my thoughts. |
