as far as nightmares go 'she breaks up with me' is pretty weak. I therefore think that the song takes the relationship/journey metaphor which is a major theme of the album literally. "leave me at the roadside" - in the wake of a car crash the singer was literally 'left'. he was the only one left alive. he hears her singing along with him because he still has those memories of her and can't get rid of them. |

| Age doesn't really matter if it's something you've already been conditioned to. This actually sets up the entire journey of the album - she brings him into a world he wasn't ready for. It doesn't really end well for anyone. | |

It can't be the singer to himself. 'Not your fault but mine, your heart on the line' has no meaning in this instance and it's the driving line of the chorus. I think it's a father singing to a son he's badly mistreated. Nothing in the lyrics implies a sexual or even romantic relationship, just a close one. Family fits. |
