This song can be taken two very different ways depending on how you punctuate it-where you put the question mark in the chorus changes the meaning of the whole song. "How am I supposed to pretend? I never want to see you again" That makes it seem like the singer is saying "get out of my life-I never want to see you again,how am I supposed to pretend that I do want to be with you?" If you do it this way... "How am I supposed to pretend I never want to see you again?" It seems more like the singer has been rejected or dumped by their partner,and they're saying "How am I supposed to make people think I never want to see you?How am I going to carry on without you?",more like there could be the word "that" between the two lines. As far as meaning goes,I would say it's about any relationship that ended badly.It's pretty open in as much as there are no genders mentioned at any point. Personally,I think that the song describes an event after a breakup,where a couple have broken up then had a drunken one night stand,which one or both have come to regret.I say drunken one night stand because of "I pull my shirt on, walk out the door Drag my feet along the floor" The singer has woken up,thrown on last night's clothes and dragged himself out of his partner's house,a little worse for wear... And... "In the afternoon, you're out on the stone and grass And I'm sleeping on the balcony after class" Sounds a lot like dragging yourself to a lecture,hungover to arse,then getting home and passing out on your balcony...pretty sure most uni students have done it ;) |

First of all,I would like to mention mixtrix and her bravery in posting such a deeply personal interpretation-you are an such a brave and inspiring person x Personally,I see this song as being about someone trying to deal with a partner who self harms and tries to commit suicide.Maybe because of aneroxia/bulima/body dismorphia.I'm going to assume the song is written about a girl,from the point of view of a guy. I also think that this song is written after the suicide of said partner-more on this later. "Come on skinny love just last the year Pour a little salt we were never here My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer" I think this is him finding his girlfriend cutting herself in the bathroom,and trying to calm her down and basically saying "Forget this,please let's move on,clean up and pretend that everything is ok" The "just last the year" I see as her being told "Please,just give me time and I'll make this all ok,we can make you better" "I tell my love to wreck it all Cut out all the ropes and let me fall My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Right in the moment this order's tall" I think this is him asking,almost begging her to leave him.He's blaming himself for her suicide attempts and he thinks that if she leaves him,she'll be ok.He can't leave her because he loves her,but blames himself for her depression,and thinks she would be better off alone.But she still loves him,and tries to tell him it's not his fault. "And I told you to be patient And told you to be fine And I told you to be balanced..." She's killed herself before this point,and he's thinking "I tried to help you,but you pushed me away,I told you to relax,I told you you were beautiful...." "Come on skinny love what happened here Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Sullen load is full; so slow on the split" I think that this is him discovering her body.Walking into a room and finding her lying there.And then finding himself in a bar,drinking and crying for his skinny love who was beautiful but never could see it... "And now all your love is wasted? And then who the hell was I?" This is him blaming himself again,almost being angry at her,as in saying "Well if you saw nothing worth living for in our shared life,what is there left for me now?Was I worth nothing to you?" "Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?" He's talking to himself now,saying that no-one could love him now he has lost his true love.... |
