Rainer Maria – New York, 1955 Lyrics 13 years ago
I also recommend recommend seeking out the 7" version of the song... it is probably my favorite rainer maria song... it has this long emotional ending that is so powerful... Like all of Rainer Maria's greatest songs, the way this song makes me feel and what its about is so direct and powerful and easy to feel, but hard or pointless to put into words maybe....

I am curious about the title, myself. I know of two possibilities, both of which are probably incorrect.

First, the 7" record sleeve has the dates "1955" and "1841" stamped on it. The years could be a reference to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, which was a newspaper that ran between those two years. It had some cool editors at times, like Walt Whitman, and with Rainer Maria's literary leanings, maybe they were into that?

Second, the 7" insert has a photograph "Overhead Crosswalk with Clock, 1947" by André Kertész. Kertész was one of the great hungarian photographers who immigrated to paris (with brassai, man ray, capa, etc)... He moved to NYC in the late 30s... and it seemed like he had an awful time in NYC... his artwork went unrecognized, he spoke bad english, during wwII he wasn't allowed to photograph in public... Anyways, in 1955, his work was excluded from the MoMA exhibition "The Family of Man".. It was probably the most important and influential art exhibit of photojournalistic photographs in the history of the medium... so that sucked for him...

I don't know the title is probably a reference to neither of those things...but check out Kertész anyways he's cool... here's the picture on the sleeve...
