| What makes you think that greedy men raped/de-virginized a girl in this song? I am genuinely curious. | |

I think this song is from the perspective of death/the one that leads the dead to the afterlife. The prostrated men are those that are dead/on their deathbeds. "To guide me their spirits from fire", she is leading them to the afterlife and protecting them from whatever awaits them if they don't complete their journey (some sort of Hell from the sounds of it). "Illuminate the worlds of the ghosts", she's showing them what they had been unaware of when they were alive. I think it all adds up and that this explanation makes sense, I just haven't been able to figure out "Ears ring and teeth click/and ears ring and teeth click/and ears ring and teeth click/and ears ring and teeth click/Ears, ears ring" yet. Any thoughts? |

In my opinion, this song sounds like it's about a young girl from a poor family. She lives with her grandmother who can no longer afford to take care of her and so, in order to prevent her suffering a painful death of starvation she gives her alcohol ("Grandma, my sleepless know that you bring me some strong drink") so that she will fall asleep/pass out and then she drowns her ("Grandma, the water is rising, by now this hair has gotten green"). Perhaps this child blames herself for what her grandmother did, as children often do and that's why she says "Grandma, I've been unruly in my dreams and with my speech". Any other opinions? |
