I think the meaning can be transposed into a wider general statement, like the whole thing with the tower of Babel was that the people decided they couldn't be bothered approaching God through a lifetime of good and pious actions and hard study and thought. They just thought "fuck it, it'd be so much easier to build some stairs and just walk up to heaven", but what's the point of enlightenment etc if you didn't earn it? The work is part of the prize, right?
This works as a way of pointing out how so many people in wealthy nations love to prance about the world stage reminding everyone else how brilliant they are and what a fine example the set for the rest of the world to aim for, but you can't really brag about something you were born into, something you were given. |

I always thought there was a more general meaning to this song as well. With the rich/poor divide and the fact that some people are born to win (Bush for example) and others will never get the opportunity to make the best of their potential, a lot of people feel locked out of any real interaction with society. The bit about building a funeral pyre makes me think of those sort of people that get so angry with the situation that they decide to force the world to notice them, like Tim McVeigh or Ted Kascinski. |

I don't have a hell of a lot more to add, other than maybe there's a hidden meaning in the "liar, Lawyer, mirror" bit. Could be a reference to cocaine and the hypocrisy of anti-marijuana campaigners who aren't bothered at all with the coked-up excesses of business executives etc. I know that in the 80s, the anti-drug rhetoric was focused on crack even though something like 70% of the drug war budget was spent on busting people for weed. The drug issue is a handy lens to view the general schism between what people's stated reasons for doing something are, and what their hidden reasons might be. We can all be very self-serving and vicious but can always justify it to ourselves, part of that is justifying it to others. |
