Guys, I just can't figure out what the "so don't breathe here/don't leave your bags" lines mean. Is it something literal or does it have something to do with some sort of idiom or what? Whether the guy in the song doesn't want his pal to be near him at the moment or is "breathe" used here in some other meaning?
The point is, English is not my native language and I am currently working on a kind of interpretation of the song, so I would highly appreciate any help on that one. Thank you. |

Guys, I would REALLY appreciate if someone tells me what the phrase "wipe away the flies" means. Is it some kind of idiom or something? 'cause, I don't think that literally it makes much sense, or does it? |

On the oooother hand, other people's thought that the song could be, let's say, slightly atheistic. I've just run through the text again and, yeah, some lines definitely show that anti-theist approach. But, hey, a good song can not have only one meaning, right ;)
And, regrding my previous reply - sorry for my misspelling; besides sophisticated is not the correct for to describe my first impression of the album. I think that "complex" will do the job greatly ) |

That is some detailed interpretation. I adore Asymmetry, though at first it really seemed sort of safisticated to me, but then, I kept on listening to this work again and again. Anyways, Sky Machine, I think, is not only one of the best songs from the band but one of the best pieces of modern music - all those rythmical and melodical switches in it make me wanna, I don't know, burst in tears of elation maybe )))
Well, on your interpretation. I think it really may be accurate enough and get the point of the song pretty much close to what it could be about. I also tend to think that Sky Machine could do something about the themes of devinity, higher powers and such. |

Thank you for such a detailed interpretation on this song. I tend to agree with almost or just everything that you have said. And I also have an assumption on the very last words from the lyrics. When the narrator says: So I'm just gonna... and then Thom gives a kind of vocal soloing which is very-very much like wolf's howling... Considering this, we could suppose that maybe the narrator just gave up to that crazy, cruel and twisted in a very bad way world and just became a wolf himself or, perhaps, decided to pretend to be a wolf not to get eaten by others. |

Hi there. Read lots of comments on the song, and, to be honest, that was the very first time I ever read the lyrics itself, though Hail to the Thief is one of my favorites from Radiohead.
Can't tell if I overlooked some kind of similar approach to the song (if I did - sorry, didn't intend to stole anyone's ideas), but I pretty much tend to think that this song could deal with a story of violent ex-husband who keeps harassing and disturbing his ex-wife (the mother of their mutual children), threatening to take the kids from her. While in the verses we get all that stream of consciosness about what he did to her in the past and how she even tried to justify it just to hav some sort of sense and reason to deal with all that violence.
Well, I know that Hail to the Thief is quite political, which in that case might give the song its metaphorical interpretation as well. |

Lots of interesting opinions I've read here on the song... Gotta admit that most of them really make sense. But I would like to share my own vision of the lyrics. I've always thought that that the story of the song is not that tragic as many guys say it is here. I think that "the house carptenter" may refer to Jesus in a way, 'cause initially he worked as a carpenter, before the whole thing started. And, if I am not mistaken, in a western christian tradition nuns are like the brides of Jesus. And in this meaning, I think the song is about a guy's love to a girl who decided to become a nun. I'm not saying that my interpretation is correct, but I think it's kinda romantic, isn't it :)
P.S. Sorry if I'm repeating someone else's idea, I've not read ALL of the posts, so I might be just writing something already mentioned. |
