| The Smiths – Still Ill Lyrics | 6 years ago |
| The Smiths are British, which means they come from England and have lived under the Queen of England as their ruler. Hence some (many) songs are about the monarchy and the reigning monarch. Still Ill is sung in the voice of the Queen of England as a lament, about the seemingly tedious topic of the Queen's high living costs, which began to be a public matter at the time, but which connects to a larger topic about the cost of the monarchy overall on the English and the world. The Queen of England had been lectured a number of times by American economists on the meaning of money and the drain that monarchy is on the world, and the song is reflective of this existential dilemma; of being one who can say "I wouldn't bother" to going to work, but is still accused of being an "ill" upon the world. These elements are mixed in with her personal outlook ("there are brighter sides to life") and her personal life ("under the iron bridge we kissed"), returning to the main theme which is her being of such sizable ownerships that everything is too expensive and unhealthy.for the world ("am I still ill?") | |
