I actually think this song holds a double meaning. The primary and more obvious is someone who believes his paradigm/view of life needs "fixing", hence running to the cough syrup for restoration. I think the more subtle meaning proves an almost suicidal note with references like "fishes of the sea are staring at me; a wet world aching for a beat of a drum" which symbolizes his desire to jump into an ocean that beckons for his heartbeat (beat of a drum) and "zombies in a park are looking for my heart" sounds like a visit to a cemetary; "where a dark world aches for a splash of the sun" (the living= the person in question). Then, he ends it off saying "One more spoon of cough syrup, now" TWICE, suggesting he's over-dosing on the medicine until it makes him better again. Such a sad song. |
