| The Monkees – Shades Of Gray Lyrics

I remember this song from something like 45 years ago. It's message about coming to terms with the dissolutionment of our reality as we become older and more aware still holds up. I would love to see a hard rock band like Disturbed do an updated cover this in the vein of what they did with Simon and Garfunkel's Hello Darkness. |

Agnes' lyrics are a bit enigmatic...mayhaps something is lost in translation from her native Danish. The melody, however, speaks to my soul, and I find myself listening to this song over and over again - a deep resonance that my subconscious is trying to interpret for me. |

The lyrics and melody are hauntingly beautiful. I first heard this while watching the end credits of the Netflix murder mystery show, Broadchurch, and read that the show's author contracted Arnalds to do the music and sound engineering for the show. Amazing! |

My personal thought is that "the garden" isn't the Garden of Eden from the Bible, but rather, it's the pristine state of the Earth, prior to mankind sprawling like roaches and debasing everything it comes in contact (ie, causing deforestation, pollution, and the extinction of many species). It is about holding the world we live in as sacred and recognizing that we are made up of such stuff and the need to hold ourselves accountable. |

One of my fav Disturbed tunes - penetrating lyrics talking about the hypocracy of those who claim to be religious, but don't practice what they preach, as it were. |

| Seether – Nobody Praying For Me Lyrics

I've been listening to more Seether lately and this song - rhythm, melody, instumentation, and lyrics - all really speak to me.
I find myself singing it while driving.
Then, I saw the video. Holy fuck - well done! And, incredibily sad. |

@[TofuBug2:8073] Well said, TofuBug2.
I've loved the original version by Simon & Garfunkel forever, but to hear David Draiman sing it, such power and intensity, yet with reverence as you say, just adds so many layers to the song and how emotionally the words and melody land. |

I've heard a few different versions of this medieval/Renaissance tune, but DCD's version has always been my favorite. It's so lively and energetic! |

The woman of my dreams shared this song with me a few days ago. I nearly cried when I heard the lyrics and melody - so sweet, so beautiful, succinctly describing the ebb and flow of their relationship with love running deeply with constancy regardless of challenging circumstances and while acknowledging that this is a beautiful new territory of emotion in his experience. I can relate to every line of this song. |

I remember the children's song "Cat Came Back" and the funny video that went with it that would sometimes air on PBS in between shows. That was the foundation for "Bitch Came Back". So, last year as I'm driving along and this comes on the radio, I nearly died laughing. Love it! |

This song is the embodiement of what life means to me - that no love is irreplaceable except love of the big water and a starry sky - our connection to the universe, and from that, springs a driving hope that feeds optimism that life will always be better than it's been. |

| Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Cathedral Lyrics

I absolutely love this song - the lyrics, the vocalization, the music, and the message - it all resonates very powerfully for me with respect to my own dissolution with Christianity due to lies, hypocrisy, the Inquisition, rape, pillaging, and plundering during the Crusades in the name of Christ, and lack of connection with the Earth. In that respect, Cathedral reminds me very much of The Garden of Love, a poem by William Blake. |

Not sure if it was the same interview or another one done on either MTV or VH1 back in the early 90s, but Bowie said that his wife, Iman, had walked in on him and Mick Jagger in bed together. Bowie was asked during the interview if he was bisexual and responded saying something to the effect, "I prefer to say try sexual." |

BOMBAY - well said! I particularly think your points about:
-his cycle of attraction and withdrawal;
-his questioning his earlier doubts;
-his inconsistent mood leading to her confusion;
-his relief at her ending things, thus taking responsibility out of her hands;
-hints her being too upset by the realization that his heart wasn't in their relationship as the cause of why she cut him off definitively;
-his hurt pride and "righteous indignation"; and that
-there really is no villain since both of them react in ways that are in keeping with who they are individually as well as in the context of who they are within the relationship they had formed (at least until the relationship ended)
...resonate for me. |

You make an excellent point about self-sabotage perpetuating the cycle of unfulfilling relationships that no doubt began with his primary caregivers either being too distracted by their own lives and needs or who simply didn't have the skill set necessary to effectively parent.
I also like your point about the complexity of the painting representing the emotional complexity of their relationship and how he retreats into the painting as a defense while she is released from her entanglement once she severs her ties to him. |

I think it's interesting that Gotye's character accuses Kimbra's character of cutting him off when he does that to her while she tries to talk to him. I have the sense that that was going on in the relationship, which led to her withdrawing her attention/affection from him. He's so wrapped in his own emotional baggage that he can't see that he pushed her away and that it's a cycle that's repeated itself as we see, since she tells of how he was "hung up on somebody that (he) used to know," and we see him referring to her now in the same context.
The song is devastatingly rich with layer upon layer of emotion and, in the video, the paint serves many purposes. We see it covering Gotye, blending him in with the background like a chameleon that's seeking shelter from an attack. But even as the paint is applied, we observe him becoming more emotional until he simply can't look at her anymore. On the other hand, Kimbra starts out painted and emotional, freely crying as she tries to reach out to him. And yet, once she decides to walk away, she doesn't look at him again - he's cut off - the paint comes off and she lets her guard down and begins her life anew. |

The lines: "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness / Like resignation to the end, always the end"
Those lines are what initially drew me to this song. They speak to a perpetual ennui within myself that I respect and even take comfort in. There's something innately beautiful about a sorrow that goes to the core of one's being and I believe that that's Gotye's point here - that that deep sadness is with him always and he respects and embraces the inevitability that there will always be an end, so he is drawn to it like a magnet, hence the line: "but I'll admit that I was glad it was over."
That resonates for me with regards to most of my past relationships. |
