| To me this song is about a girl who chooses the wrong guy. He is everything she wanted but nothing she needs. To me the line about the devil's water relates to this new boy. He is perfect but she needs someone else, the boy that looks like Jesus, meaning the long haired guy one that is not so nice. I think this song is about a girl who has the perfect guy but she loves a boy that is not so good for her. | |

| In an interview in Rolling Stone Nate Ruess, the author and singer of the song. Explained the meaning. The song was written the day after a long night of partying. That night he got so drunk he could barely walk, he even puked in a cab. The song is the progression of the night. The beginning illustrates when he first got into the bar, he was completely there. Maybe their was someone who he broke up with, but that's not the point. The middle is a partially drunk Nate saying everything someone who is drunk says. The last verse is the end of the night. The idea of having someone carry him home is absolutely literal. In the Interview I read Nate explained that by the time he finally got home he had this song in his head, but he couldn't even see straight to write until the next day. This song is nothing more than a chronicle of a really drunk night. | |

I think this song is about young love and the twisted teen subculture. "Who's jealous who's jealous who's jealous who's jealous of who? If I get busy then I couldn't care less what you do But when I'm by myself I think of nothing else Than if a boy just might be getting through and touching you " Especially reminds me of teen love while "She doesn't know but when she's GONE I sit and drink her perfume. I'm sure she's drinkin TOO, but wondering what for and who" makes me think of the twisted games teens play. Combined with the video I really get the feel that this song is about young love and the twisted teen subculture but it could truthfully be about anything. |
