| I agree, while adding that I believe the 'flood' part, might be about another woman. She was the flood/she caused the flood, that wrecked their home (relationship). | |

I think it's about a woman who is going a bit crazy, maybe she's depressed. And scared about a lot of things, while the guy is keeping her company and supporting her: (I don't like walking around this old and empty house So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear The stairs creak as I sleep, it's keeping me awake It's the house telling you to close your eyes) The depression is taking it's toll, on both of them. Things aren't the way it used to be. The first two lines might suggest that she does things she's not aware of, or just loses her mind for a bit. (Some days I can't even trust myself It's killing me to see you this way There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back I tell her that I miss our little talks Soon it will all be over, buried with our past You used to play outside when you were young Full of life and full of love Some days I feel like I am wrong and I am right Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear) The chorus, to me, is pretty clear. Even though they see things different (the voice in her head, the fear for the house and other things, for example) they still love each other and believe that everything will be okay. So the ship, cheesy as it is, is their love. This next part is about them knowing it's best to break up. (it's torn apart) But at the same time, they don't want to leave each other. (I wish you'd disappear -> Wait for me, please hang around) (Go, go, go away I wish you'd disappear All that's left is a ghost of you Now we're torn, torn, torn apart There's nothing we can do Just let me go, me against you Now wait, wait, wait for me Please hang around I see you when I fall asleep) I think this last part is about the fights they have. It's all very frustrating, both of them don't know how to handle it, so it results in a fight, where they say things they don't really mean (don't listen to a word I say), and they don't really listen to each other because it's the same fight over and over again (the screams all sound the same). (Hey! Don't listen to a word I say Hey! The screams all sound the same Hey!) This part is a big difference compared to the beginning of the song: at first he was supporting her, now it's all about screaming, being torn apart, and so on. So I think the song is about the 'life-line' of a relationship dealing with a depression or something like that. At first one of them is like: 'it'll be fine, i'll support you through this'. But as time passes, it gets harder and harder for both of them. They know it's better to end it, but they can't. |
