@[JosephWolf:2379] Also Holly and Candy were/are transgender women. They were not drag queens. |

| The Velvet Underground – Candy Says Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This song is definitely about TRANSGENDER (I have to capitalize this because I guess some people do not know or choose to make transphobic slurs) actress Candy Darling; she was not just confused and depressed because of the dilemma she had about getting the operation, but because she felt she was unacceptable. She hated herself deep down (this was mentioned in the lovely documentary Beautiful Darling) and was very lost on how to live her life. In general, it's about the decisions we all have to make and growing up and introspection. Candy knew she was a woman, but never truly knew who she was. She died so young from lymphoma...it was tragic. She never got to see the progress we made in acceptance of the trans community. Although it is not much, it was better than in her day when even drag queens were arrested in NYC. Candy was not a prostitute; she felt guilty in sexual encounters because men thought she was a cisgender woman and probably would have killed her if they found out she happened to have a penis. She did enjoy sexual encounters where she didn't get naked, but she still felt guilt. It was taking a walk on the wild side because of her transgender status. |

| Marina and the Diamonds – Valley of the Dolls Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Very close, but actually valley of the dolls is slang for the pills (sleeping pills) used frequently in the work/being addicted to them. The first line in the film is "If you want to climb Mt. Everest you first must pass the valley of the dolls" which means if you want your fame and life to persevere you must beat/avoid the addiction. SPOILER ALERT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN WATCHING THIS FILM/BOOK Actually, the model, Jennifer ends up committing suicide using the "dolls," and I feel like this song focuses mostly on her. Her mother never accepted her (born with a void) and who she felt was the love of her life ended up having a tragic brain disorder that caused his health to rapidly decline and forced him to be placed in a sanitarium. On top of that, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and overdosed before the results of her biopsy even came back...she was just done. Also sleeping pills is a slow death. However, I can also see this from the perspective of Neely, the singer. She really went down like a shooting star because she was the one hooked on the dolls the most. She took so many pills and drank so much alcohol it was tragic. No one wanted to work with her because she was unreliable, which is a big change from being on the top like she was. She played so many roles and lost herself in the process. Jennifer, the small town girl, had more problems with finding her identity, but she makes it out alright. Sorry if this is long, I just really love the work and this song! |

| Of Mice & Men – YDG?! Lyrics | 12 years ago |
For everyone asking: YDG means "You dig?" I get the feeling that the song is sending the message that Austin is supporting his fans or a friend, understands their troubles and will be by their sides while they make the step get the most out of life and be who they are. When he says "We're not the same," I think he means that he has come into his independence. Also, I think Austin is trying to tell his fans not to put him on too high of a pedestal because he's like everyone else in the first line OR he means he actually cares about fans rather than putting on a pose, which connects with brokeneggshells really valid thoughts on him dissing Attack Attack! This is just my spin, though. |
