Public Enemy – Fight the Power Lyrics 13 years ago
Has there being a half decent rap album since "Fear of a Black Planet"?

Since then rap has basically be a load of materialistic big noting shyt.

It used to modern urban folk music, now it’s just a bunch of try-hards going on about their cars and perpetuating stereotypes.

Two crap wars later and what did rap have to say about it? " It’s your birthday, can I buy you a Bacardi"

Fuck me… rap had a golden chance to be widely relevant…instead it fell asleep on its watch!

...I hope I’m wrong?

Did someone finally reinvent the wheel?

Kylie Minogue – Come Into My World Lyrics 13 years ago
I go as far as to say this seemingly innocent ditty is about Kylies unlikely penchant anal sex!

Kylie's fame, her metaphorical ‘world’, is in no small part based on her world famous arse, so the act of 'coming into her world' is more lewd than the average punter gives credit.

Who's to say she isn't a kinky freak who digs a good ol' tail gunning every now and then? After all, Mick Hutchence used to shag her back in the day, and you can't tell me any bloke that dies jerking off tied to a door knob didn't at least try going the trademans entrance on more than one occasion?

Kasabian – Empire Lyrics 13 years ago
Its an anti war song.

As pointed out the song is inspired by the Wilfred Owen poem Dulce et Decorum est and parallels the futility of dying for ones country in WW1 as accounted for by Owen, with the unquestioning desire of the western world for going into Afghanistan to give the Taliban a good whacking post 9/11 (“Stop, I said its happening again”)

Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories – Do You Sleep? Lyrics 13 years ago
Simply because she beat him to it by 17 years, Goyte should pay royalties to Lisa Loeb for plagiarizing a tale of falling out of love with someone and wondering if they’ll every cross paths again.

Perhaps you could make an argument that ‘ Somebody I used to know’ is the musical sequel to this song, but the theme is pretty much the same!

INXS – Mystify Lyrics 13 years ago
Come on folks, the meaning couldn't be any clearer, "all the vials...' 'Almond looks' 'I see your face'. The song is basically about Arab girls...

Mick would systematically pants every women he came into contact with, but Arab girls were an unattainable creature for him because he didn't understand their culture and was intrigued by their understated figures covered all over except the face and almond eyes.

Seriously, next time you go to Dubai or where ever, play this on the ipod when you go down the street or shopping centre and it all makes sense!

Elvis Costello – Oliver's Army Lyrics 13 years ago
Further to this, the term 'Oliver's Army' was used in this context in the 1974 BBC documentary ' The World at War' I believe it was the episode "Home Fires: Britain (1940—1944)"

If the song was written about 1977 (?) the use of the term on a widely watched programme predates the song and puts it in the frame as the likely origin of the term 'Oliver's Army'

Because of that, I'm inclined to say bollocks to the Oliver Cromwell and the lazy historians that credit him as the aforementioned 'Oliver'

Elvis Costello – Oliver's Army Lyrics 13 years ago
The Oliver is question IS NOT Oliver Cromwell

Oliver Lyttelton was Churchill’s minister for trade in the early stages of the Second World War, and as a result of protected occupations act, any man not compelled to join the forces due to critically required trade skills were dubbed to be part of ‘Oliver’s Army’

The title is significant because Lyttleton later became Secretary of State for the Colonies during the early to mid 50’s which coincided with multiple military deployments to quell independence movements at a time when the sun was finally setting on the empire.
