I see this as kind of a dick move on Jacks part. Sure I dont know the whole story and nobody does. But to call Meg lazy for simply wanting different things out of life in front of the whole world is surprisingly immature of him. I also think the hook "Hip Eponymous" is pretty lame. |

The amazing thing is I believe they actualy wrote it to include all of the interpretations above. Maybe not so much the gambling thing but thats still an interesting idea. An additional interpretation could be centered around the natural cycles of the earth. Global warming etc. We also grew out of the earth "as naturally as branches from a tree" (evolution) Sex is a ritual: Men act tough to attract a mate (they will swing their swords for show) while women seductively play hard to get (while you turn your flower petals so slow.) So continuing with this theme, wars,human behavior, and the build it up--tear it down cycles of nature, is simply something the planet is doing, and in a sense it is fate. But it is still amazing watching it go. |

Heres my take on this song. He seems to be comparing his life as a musician in the big time, a "star" if you will, to being a space cadet. My first clue was the similarity of the song's first two lines and Issaac Broc's two songs: "Diamonds on the face of evil", and "Float On". He's refering to the early days of his career when he first got signed by Sub Pop records through their A&R agent Isaac Broc. Dan was "up there floating with them" (the band Modest Mouse and friends) playing on stage and being adored by fans ("we were standing on the platform, the favorite sons of history") But life as a musician has alienated him from his old life and "Yulia". And has made him spaced out. Also, even though Boekner says he wasn't in the interview, I really do think he was talking about corporate control of the radio. Its about both. |

The only reason I would say its not about his daughter is because his daughter is six. You dont wear heels or have lockers or drink at age six. Its meant to be interpreted many ways. Its about both his private life with his wife (and his jealousy of her as a model) and his public life as a pop star. BUT also pointing out how he is a victim of media's sex appeal as well. (The "she" is media herself, and in that sense he is a fan.) When he says he's hungry, hes saying he is hungry for fans, and at the same time hungry as a fan. Whos Jealous of who? the teens are obsessed and jealous of popstars Whos jealous of who? the media and the popstars are dependant on the fans and need to fuel their fan's obsessions to stay in business. Whos jealous of who? Jack is jealous of his wife. (incessant whistles of other men) also, (Force fed, force mixed 'till I drop dead You can't defeat her, when you meet her you'll be what I said) this could be about the music industries pressures on an artist to "mix" their sound a certain way. and when you meet this industry and give in you will be dead inside. It could also mean hes getting sick of having to mingle and being forced to mix with the public. Hes solo rollin now in that he has his own label and is also a solo artist. However hes only one-side off the boat. Ok I could go on but I'm beating a dead horse at this point. It just baffles me how amazingly complex this song is! |
