Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics 7 years ago
Darkness is despair and sadness, hidden deep inside over many years, that keeps rising its head from time to time. It's a deep longing, deep emotional conflict between what was wanted but didn't happen. Yet memories of what could have been were planted, and they keep up the sense of loss and longing. It is grief that just wouldn't go away and is carried inside as a certain kind of depression.

Silence is a state of hopelessness. There is nothing more to do. Outcome that cannot be turned around even if you wanted. Either death or final separation from the loved ones has scarred your very soul, and there is no light inside for cheering, thus the implosion of the person into silence, the quiet lonely suffering.

Walking through life alone, struggling your struggles and narrow opportunities. And sometimes, while basking in the light of something nice, having built up your walls to the harsh reality of your circumstances, you may come upon something (or someone) that passes through your walls and touches your soul, splitting the dark night of the soul with some glimmers of light. And loosing that, again, is soul breaking.

That touch brings revelation, awakening, and you see the sad truth that most people around us have much in common in that you can't get through this life without scars, and everyone is dealing with their own pain, alone, not sharing their story for experience and fear of being judged. So they show facade of success, bow and pray to their idols, trying hard to hide their emptiness, being shallow in communication, not speaking their heart and not listening with their heart. They refuse to care, and don't expect any better in return.

That is the sad state of the world, and it grows like cancer. Yet most people are blind and oblivious, busy bowing to their neon idols of success, being jealous and judgemental. When noone gives a shit, you aren't eager to open up and share. And even when someone greets us with open arms, they often face distrust and rejection. You may preach, but your words meet empty silence.

But the yearning for empathy and true connection remains, and it finds its output in the graffity on the walls, painting doom and crying out the lack of true love, for only simple people speak their minds even if through inappropriate channels. More sophisticated people suffer alone, reflecting in silence.

The best version of this song I've heard is rendition by Nouela. Simple and from the heart, to your soul.

Catatonia – Mulder & Scully Lyrics 13 years ago
It's about a single woman in love with a married man who loves her back but can't leave his family, for kids or other reasons, so he is suppressing his feelings and avoids getting too close with her, causing her confusion and suffering because she can see his feelings.

It's a cry of desperation, being trapped in this hopeless love, wanting to get free of it but unable to, and although she doesn't want to break his home and replace his wife, she can't help but dream about being his only woman.

Her desperation has grown to a point where she is considering something she'd never approve - romantic affair.
"Must we all march in two by two by two?"

She wants him but she doesn't want to be a reason to break his family.
"And as for some happy ending, I'd rather stay single and thin"

Her guilt is fighting her desire. She is very puzzled herself but she is proposing to have a secret affair.
