The Mountain Goats – Southwood Plantation Road Lyrics 13 years ago
It's not a mistake. All creative language like that is known as metaphor or poetic metaphor. What you're talking about is called a perfect metaphor. But all creative language like similes, personification, and even rhyme scheme is all commonly referred to as metaphor.

I'm reading over these lyrics again and listening to the song. I'm pretty sure the first line is I'm not the tiger HE never had. If I'm right, then I'm not sure who that refers to or why...

Something that I picked up on the very first time I heard this song is the theme of unconditional love. I think that goes without saying. But something I'm surprised to see that nobody else has mentioned is the connection of that theme with the bird. When I think of birds, I think of the sky. Birds live above people, whether they are flying or in the trees.

The way I see it, the bird is very similar to the bear that appears in the bridge. The bear protects the object of the narrator's love, and the bird watches over this person. It's easy to think that this song is about romantic love, but I think that it could really be about any kind of unconditional love. Because he never refers to any sort of physical connection, he could really be talking about anybody. I can relate to this song on several levels, but never on a romantic level.
