"You said that you could let it go" this means to... drop the emotions he felt about someone or something. To "let something go" means to put it behind you. "And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody you used to know." To be "hung up" on somebody is to be still attached to them emotionally. So she is saying; "You said you didn't feel that way about it*, and I wouldn't catch you emotionally entangled with somebody you used to know." *whatever it is. Does that help? |

So many think this is about a simple break up... it isn't. The break up is the setup for the song, it is the base upon which the songs emotional core sits. And that emotional core is the feeling received when a part of your life is cut off. Gotye is an ENTP. As an ENTP his inferior function is Si, which is largely the function of the brain that deals with the separation of details. His dominate function deals with connections to everything. Breaking the connection with a person is usually a very easy thing for ENTP's (yes I am one) however when we become attached to someone, we pour our emotions into them and separate them as one unique being whom we view as special. The idea that such a person would never be talked to again... that is a very painful idea. We've used our inferior function at that point. All we really want is acknowledgement, that we existed in some happy place in the past... that we were something. And really that function is what this song is all about. Not intended, never intended. I listen to this and it makes me think of all the past friends and lovers whom I don't talk to currently... whom I've completely lost track of. Those people I will never see again, and that is part of my life they took with them. They made that part of my life meaningless. And that is what this song is talking about. |
