Townes did write this song. He wrote it for the band. He toured with them for a couple months towards the end of his career. Supposedly each verse is for one of the members. I cant tell you which one is which. Im not sure if there is a single thread that runs through the song. If there is, it escapes me. It is a great song. This song is how I found Townes Van Zandt. ps - The lyrics are incomplete. |

I dont think this song is about somebody's son. To me, the singer is speaking to a girl who has a sugar daddy. And the girl is a total beyach and the singer is more or less a cuckold wuss who cant move on. Two lyrics to my point [Dont you know that its wrong to take what he's giving you. ] Its not wrong to take from your dad, even if you are privileged, unless dad is hooking you up w/ drugs, etc. This song isn't about drugs. [a love cant grow, cause there's too much to give cause you'd rather live for the thrill of it all ] He's finally realizing the story in his head is not going to play out w/ this materialistic woman. To me... this song is a dude standing on the front porch one morning, he just found out she shacked up w/ sugar daddy again. The light finally goes on, shes not going to change. He obviously still digs the chick , this song isn't about indifference. Its pain and frustration and he unloads a dump truck of it on her while she's staring at him wondering why he is still here. Hopefully he went out and found a nice girl. Funny stuff. H&O remind me a lot of Kenny Rogers. My parents liked them and I always thought they were cheesy. As I re listen to some of the stuff, its easy to see why their popularity spans decades. Its great music. I just had to grow up a bit. Different take, thought I would take the time to share. Greg |

inside room, special book. That could be anne frank. Did anne have a lantern? Like my english teacher said, you can see something in a story, it doesnt have to be what the author had in mind. I agree w/ leamanc. Most of the REM songs hit their peak when Mike just starts w/ his gutteral wails. so f*** rocks. I do love this song. No idea what a bartered lantern borrowed is, or why its so important. Alone in a crowd...I get that. If you pull up next to me and I am wailing to this song, Im probably changing those lyrics. Free advice in that scenario - keep your window up, I dont sing as well as mike, thats why i have a day job... |
