Coldplay – Speed of Sound Lyrics 11 years ago
I love this. Childlike wonder never dies, and it's one of the most beautiful things in the world.

Fly and return safely, friend.

The Killers – Somebody Told Me Lyrics 11 years ago
This is definitely the best interpretation I've seen so far. Like igywigie said, the "seventeen tracks" line is pretty much a giveaway.

I know that feeling of writing something, only to realize a few weeks later that it sounds uncannily similar to another artist's tune. The more years that pass, the more music is made and the fewer original melodies we'll have..maybe that's why so much of the music and movies industries are comprised of rehashes nowadays.

The Fall of Troy – Macaulay McCulkin Lyrics 11 years ago
Just a random thought. Macaulay Culkin is most famous for his role in the Home Alone movies. The lyrics seem to be a sort of dark twist on a similar plot - intruders trying to make their way into a locked home.

Drawing from similar themes, I suppose. I think the extra "McCulkin" part is just for some fun symmetry in the name and doesn't serve any deep purpose. TFOT really enjoy wordplay in their song titles, and I think this is no exception.

Great song. Favorite line is the "knock knock knock" part. Intense, riotous and charged with energy.

Death Cab for Cutie – St. Peter's Cathedral Lyrics 12 years ago
Very insightful comment..surprised people seemed to just glass over it.

You should check out Anathema's song "Internal Landscapes" when you get the chance, they took an audio recording of a man talking about a near-death experience he had. No religious overtones, just a very cool monologue with a very cool song built around it.

Queens of the Stone Age – Six Shooter Lyrics 12 years ago
Two glass eyes
I'll fuckin' tell you lies
I'm on the side of the road
You're all gonna fuckin' die
Yeah, yeah

Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
Pow, pow, pow, ow

Fuck this world
Well fuck you too!
I'll fuckin' kill your best friend
What you fuckin' gonna do
Here I come

Shoot, shoot, shoot shoot shoot shoot
Pow

Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
Pow

Whaaaa, pow
Wooooo, pow
Whaaaa, pow

Shoot, shoot, shoot shoot shoot shoot
POW!

Lyrics as interpreted from the live acoustic version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YvL1TE2HYk). Much easier to understand the lyrics when he sings them, but I fucking love the screaming. A one-minute dickstomping powerhouse song. Makes me wanna start a barfight.

Steven Wilson – Like Dust I Have Cleared From My Eye Lyrics 12 years ago
Steven Wilson spoke in a few interviews preceding the release of Grace for Drowning about the meaning of the term. He mentioned that as he grows older (hell, he's almost 45), he's found that a lot of the things that the world seemed to revolve around don't matter after all. Things like popularity, fashion, views of society - all these things that we are raised to rely on are ephemeral, fleeting concepts. They change in and out with the seasons, with the decades, the millennia.

He mentions Grace for Drowning as his most "out-there" album, mainly because he has stopped caring about what others think. His main goal was to produce an album that he could meet his own standards, not one that would struggle to meet the needs of the mass population.

With that large pretext out of the way, I believe this song is a direct address to the "generic person." Show a teenager or adult this album and they would probably laugh and say it isn't even music. Then they'd show it to their like-minded friends to reinforce their own opinions and biases.

But Steven Wilson doesn't care any more. The older he gets, the less relevant the public "eye" is. The big eye is always watching..but that's all it can do. It has no arms, no legs, no mouth..nothing to stop him from doing what he wants to. All it can do is watch.

I think almost everyone holds themselves back in everyday life, afraid of this eye. When you want to burst into song on the side of the street, but you're afraid of being judged. Or perhaps you head to the dance floor of a club but you don't want to look "stupid." We worry so much about making good impressions, appearing likeable to the majority. All of these fears, these judgements..in the end, they don't matter after all.

Steven Wilson's realized this, and that all you can really do is just continue to live your life as you wish, one step at a time..let the judgemental voice of society fall upon deaf ears, and stare up at the sky. Breathe in, now...breathe out now.
