I think this entire album is about an abusive/codependent relationship, and it sounds like the speaker is harboring a lot of ill will toward her mate, even though her actions contradict those feelings. The last part sounds a bit like the act of a wedding or of pushing into some kind of commitment with the other person, even if the other person is unknowing or unwilling at the moment. It also sounds like some other aspect of the unhealthy relationship between the speaker and the other person is the speaker's very obsessive view of the other person, to the point where she tries to control or manipulate him even just by lying to him. |

I think that this song is more about apathy and how one's way of showing (or not showing) love can be misinterpreted as malicious, when one is really just apathetic or does not feel emotions "like everyone else", hence the lines "maybe I'm a different breed; maybe I'm not listening". I think the comments about possibly asking for help or killing himself are more in reference to things others may say to someone who is like the guy speaking. Often when someone doesn't seem able or willing to care about something others have deemed important, such as one person's love or another's feelings, it is assumed that there is something "wrong" with the person, such as mental illness/depression, etc., which can in turn make many people want to care even less than they already might. Since sailing requires one to simply let go for the most part and go with the direction of the wind, maybe he is referring to taking that kind of stance on life in general; he's not like "normal" people, and he is not interested in trying to be. I also think the ADD reference is kind of an ironic or sarcastic comment. Often we mistake simple personality differences or differences in preference for mental illness, and if someone wants to think that he is apathetic because of ADD or some other dysfunction, then he doesn't seem to care much to change their opinion. |
