I think it's obvious what the song's about. And when the author says it is it must be. I think its more likely to be darker than high school date rape. The ages, symptom etc..being described sound like childhood abuse by a family member. That's the form of abuse that destroys trust on a global level and people spend their whole lives trying to get away from the consequences, even if it kills them, and it often does. Some sexually act out, others won't trust anyone ever. They might make the motions of trust and relationship but the partner figures it out sooner or later. Many use drugs and alcohol to just not feel it. Some openly, others secretly.I'm one of the "nice" women (no sexually acting out)who has lived out lies for long periods of time in relationships (mine are always 4 years at least)and continues to hear the complaints about seeming fine on the outside while he senses the inner complete disconnect. I'm trying to be different but only I can change me. No one can "rescue". The author of this song couldn't have helped and shouldn't feel bad. If he'd told anyone back then, no one would have helped her. So he should let it go. Hopefully things are better today.
At first I was angered when I heard the song. I thought "how dare a man think he's got something to say about THIS?" Then I became more calm, rational even, and decided its possible the intentions weren't bad. |
