| Cat Stevens – Where Do The Children Play? Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I think it is deeper than just over development, I think it's talking about what this new and changing environment is doing to us mentally, I believe the word children in this song is actually not the literal meaning, but our own inner child. The first verse is the new and seemingly impressive things we are creating, jumbo planes, cosmic trains etc and how we are now capable of getting all the material possessions we think we want. The second verse is about the rat race, roads over fresh green grass so we can pump gas is how the education system makes us efficient machines for making money, the fresh green grass is our young carefree minds being replaced by efficient emotionless thought like roads that we can't get off. The third verse is about chasing rainbows and how we are prisoners of the modern world. 'Keeping on building higher', never being satisfied or able to enjoy what we do have, always wanting more. We're so stuck in the way that we have been told how to live, that we don't know how to live or what living really is, we can't think for ourselves and need to be told when to live and when to die. And all this is laced together with the chorus, 'when do the children play', when do we forget about the money, when do we appreciate what is really important and beautiful in this world, when do we get to release our minds from the stress and worries of the modern world and let our inner child play? |
