I listened to this song about 100 times in a row and feel confident that I get it. It's about a common relationship problem in our culture where people go into new relationships before they are fully over a previous relationship. The song shows us the experience from both sides. To support my theory I look at Kimbra's character bemoaning Gotye's character being hung up on someone he "used to know", and then her character becoming someone he "used to know". Further, the title of the album is "making mirrors". I'm convinced the artists are trying to show us a reflection of ourselves. There is an important lesson here, if we are able to see ourselves in this song. The lesson is to get over old flings before moving on. It touches so many people because it's a common problem. The song is a masterpiece, which I'm certain will make the artists wealthy, and rightly so. Art is so important when it can improve the lives of thousands of people. There's other excellent devices and harmonies, but hey, we're talking lyrics here right! ;) Having read the other interpretations above, I think many are correct because they pick up on different aspects of the song. Someone pointed out that Gotye's character doesn't care about the girl and he is really railing about the blow to his ego. I couldn't agree more. I'm proud a work like this came out in the pop genre. This song demonstrates how powerful emotions and bonds can be created, even in a relationship that didn't work. The chorus is especially powerful on it's own, and even more so in context. The verses leading to the chorus imply the relationship wasn't much, but Gotye's tone in the chorus shows us that he is torn apart. I was moved enough to create an account here just to say that. |
