The Rolling Stones – Ruby Tuesday Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is not just about a girl. The tine it was written was when the Western Civilization had a sudden influx of Eastern Philosophical ideas. John Lennon's "Across the Universe", almost all of George Harrison's songs had a lot of philosophy.

Ruby Tuesday is the very essence of life. Be it Happiness, God, Chance, Faith....in essence - Absolute Truth. The Hindu Philosophy of absolute truth says that things are what you believe them to be. That is what Ruby Tuesday is, she changes everyday. When the sun is bright, or in the darkest night, she exists everywhere and nowhere - anywhere we humans want her to be.

The reason why she is mysterious and ever changing, is because she IS humanity's purpose. We humans think we have one purpose. It's not true. Purpose is what we make it to be. Ruby Tuesday thus can't be chained to a life where nothing's gained or lost.

The last paragraph deals with hope. The songs explains how Ruby Tuesday does what she wants, when she wants. Then why do we humans even care? So this talks about our dreams and how we shouldn't let them slip. That is the very essence of life, our purpose, of Ruby Tuesday.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree about it being a bit straightforward. But it is by no means a Biblical Narrative. If you understand the mood and what he's trying to convey you'll see that it's the opposite. Everything in life has either a good side or a bad. He's lost all faith and hope in life itself. He takes everything that gives us purpose and looks at it in the most negative way. "Religion" itself is something that was invented by man to keep us from going crazy with our conscious. Cohen talks about how that same religion which is supposed to guide is, is also controlling is. It is actually blinding us from the ultimate truth - there is no purpose for our existence.

Also religion - more specifically Christianity, has been used for the past 2 millenniums as a tool to rule everyone. Who knows if there really is a God? "I Don't Even Know His Name". The fact that people use God as an escape from the ultimate truth that our existence is of no value is very saddening. The other element that is always related to God is LOVE. In extreme negativity, we can see that the concept of Love also is nothing more than a flawed-tool man uses keep his insanity.

In the end, this song is about the complete opposite of everything that we know to be as "Good", and "Happy". Love, God, Faith, Hope. In the end, they are just meaningless.

Arcade Fire – In the Backseat Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with the comments that "sitting in the back seat" has a connection with not being in control. I do think it has a deeper rooted meaning in the context of this awesome album though. When we are young, our parents always sit in the front seat. We get so excited when once in a while our mothers would say, "you can sit in the front this time". There comes an age where we start to dream how it would be like when we "learn to drive", and when we can say, "Dad, why don't I drive? You can sit in the back seat" Most of us have that dream. There comes a point where we are older that our parents do let us drive and they gradually sit in the back seat. My interpretation of the final song of the album is this - When our parents reach a certain age, they give up the responsibility of sitting in the front seat. Maybe Arcade Fire is talking about how at a certain age, we just want to go back to being a kid. Just forget the responsibility. The sadness in the album is that the singer is feeling this phase of life at such a young age. Idk, maybe I'm wrong. But that's what I think it means.
