About the verse "With the wrong tune playing til it sounded right, yeah" .. I got it as he was doing something wrong in general (he played wrong tune).. and he was doing it for so long time, that it started to sound correctly, right to him.. he just adapted to this incorrect behaviour or way of thinking.. Like when people do bad things, they just habituate and those bad thigs become normal to them (their limits and morality will change to another level).. |

About the verse "With the wrong tune playing til it sounded right, yeah" I think something else than you.. I got it as he was doing something wrong in general (he played wrong tune).. and he was doing it for so long time, that it started to sound correctly, right to him.. he just adapted to this incorrect behaviour or way of thinking.. so I see it as not so positive than you.. Like when people do bad things, they just habituate and those bad thigs become normal to them (their limits and morality will change to another level..) |

A funeral as a possibility in the future if he won't change his manners? Or? Thanks God Martin stopped drinking anyway! More time for more songs, I can't wait for the next album! :-) |

It all seems to me like the situation he stopped using.. (Waiting for the last time for my friend to change my mind - he was overdosed by special strong mixture of heroin and cocaine for the last time, he was clinically dead for two minutes and as he stated, it changed his thinking, life). "ask me what I want/easy that's just more" - he himself told, that he didn't know when to stop, he always wanted more and more.. And I see this as the "white suited-up Dave" is kind of his dealer or the internal desire for drug, he wants to "lift the anchors" and get high, but the other Dave is so confident in himself and his purity, that he won't allow it.. The boat symbolizes to me a trip, but it won't move anywhere, it is impossible.. It is a boat full of remembrance of drug obsessed life and as the "suited-up dirty Dave" lies here, he is a part of that junk garbage and clean Dave is free to leave it behind and go away..

When I hear this song, to my mind come the indentical images that I saw in my head when reading the book 1984, I didn't realized this connection much, it was for me like something I know for years so I did not wonder.. For me it is a little bit corresponding to a song I Want It All, that was written by Dave as well.. In interview about PTA he stated about I Want It All: it was about "having everything I need, so why don't I see that or appreciate what's good in my life, and in fact do my best to destroy it? I naturally gravitate towards looking for the negative in something, even when it's good - that could be my lovely wife or my lovely children. And I do gravitate towards things that aren't good for me - not necessarily drugs or alcohol, just the idea of having something good, then tearing it apart and being left with a piece of shit, almost like I want to push it away because I feel I don't deserve it. So I think it is about an internal feeling of an person who is always missing something higher, and this is why he makes some incomprehesible decisions, like breaking up etc, "he feels alone, never feels at home..." Like he wants something more to be fulfiled by, but he can't find it anywhere.. And the chorus seems to me like excuse to his conscience or maybe real oppinions of people arround. (But I rather see it as his conscience). It is like a struggle inside him, on one side he is suffering from the "missing something", on the other side he denies its existence, because it brings only a pain, disappointment to others and he doesn't belive or see the solution anyway..

I agree with you, he is more defensive and it seems to me like he was crying inside, he wants her back, but he don't want to change his mind and admit he has his fault too. He always repeat again his "song" when she is trying to tell him something or explain and he uses it everytime he fells danger.. (As when he is singing the chorus for the second time, she is singing only the voice without text, like it is all he hears, when she is talking, because he wants to prove he is the only right one.) The second thing I would like to add is, that he is like bound to his background - wall - and he is maybe to proud to make a responsive step. But inside he would like to (we can call it heart), but the bound to his statements won't let him (let's call it brain). For all the time song lasts, he doesn't move even a little. |
