All of your comments are really helping me even getting to another level understanding this powerfull song. I would like to start by re-iterating that I am exactly in this situation right now and when the song came out, I made it listen to my boy and he loves it probably more than I do. Why? Because we both relate to it perfectly. Let me explain... First, we are all sinners. And very few people accept in others the flaws that sometimes, they even carry around. This is not about people that have changed but two sinners, that loved and lost, because of who they are, and they tell each other they accept one another just the way they are. No need to change "I've had mine, you've had yours, we both know". Yes, it refers to the past but the second verse talks about the now. "It's my birthday, I'll get high if I want to, can't deny that I want to but I'll lie if I have too" : see how he still lies? They won't change. Because she doesn't tell her friends how she cares, "you and all your friends in a club one time, all so convinced that you're following your heart cause your mind don't control what it does sometimes. We all have our nights though, don't be so ashamed I've had mine, you've had yours, we both know, we know." So even now that she keeps doing mistakes, he forgives her because he understands her. Now : "You hate being alone
you ain't the only one you hate the fact that you bought the dream and they sold you one" : He hates being alone so he understands that she has to go see somewhere else in the meantime before they are ready for one another. She hates the fact that she is falling in love again with him and she fears to be able to trust him... But she does. For some readon. "Don't tell me, I don't care, if you're hurt, I won't, tell you, you don't care, if you're true." In the end, he wants her to be honnest and so does she. And they will find their way :) |

Genius. "Life lined up on the mirror, don't blow it" methaphoricly refers to cocaine. He's obviously hiding himself behind something and the mirror confronts him to what he really is, the only one that cared or can care for what he is. Is him. Afterwards, he starts refering to his father, that he reminds himself of him. Love the " I even look good in a broken mirror" because he sees HOPE. His mother, the good side of him, "I see the change; I see the message". "You told me that they, understand the man I am" and he tells the mirror "Any questions... I come to you... You always have the answer" means that in the end... He's the only one to understand himself. Very few can. |

Brilliant song. Yes it can refer to an athlete. But it refers mainly to someone who is rejected from the world but has a mission, a destiny "written in the stars". Now let me explain... This is about a man who as a child was beat up and neglected. Why? Because no one never understood him. Massive Attack is used to refer to the 90's, a song he listened to, while cuting himself from the outside world, to hide from whomever rejected him. Why did they reject him? Because he was poor. Considered crazy when he really is a genius. Understands what everybody doesn't. Now the only way he now has to be valued is through his work "racket and bat" (metaphor). The jacket and hat stand for the position he has. "I used to be the kid that no one cared about / That's why you have to keep screaming till they hear you out" is what proves my point. Now, even when he did the good, the "legal" would lead him astray. Now, he's making money, but he used to starve. He dreamt about it and acheived it. And that's it. |

This song is about the apocalypse or the end of the world being near. First, he tries to forget about what's happening on the outside by closing in from it with it's music. Then, he sees music might help him fight the outside world, from the kid's dancing and he "sees heavin in sight". "From underneath the rubble sing a rebel song" means that it might seem like a fun pop song but he's singing lyrics to help save the world. He is basicly using music as a medium to speak with today's generation. If he can be a comma to this world, better then a full stop, meaning we are nothing but each and one of us can keep the story going on... Cathedrals in my heart refers to faith always lying in the bottom of our soul, we just need to reach out and believe, jump from the bad to the good (two trapeze). Now, every tear is a waterfall simply means that everytime someone cries or is in pain, it actually builds up to be a whole world that is hurting. And we need to wake up and start taking care of it. |
