The Black Keys – Little Black Submarines Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Sounds to me like it's just about being disconnected from yourself and the rest of the world... depression and negative emotions.. can't hear your friends and loved ones calling for you because your mind is on autopilot... themes of addiction and denial and out of control behavior covering up the pain of a broken heart which could range anywhere from romantic love to just disillusionment with life... anything more specific than that is conjecture. Great song.. |
Acid Bath – Venus Blue Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I always envisioned this was a unrequited love song directed at a girl who's dead (i.e. the singer is at her funeral). |
The Black Crowes – She Talks To Angels Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The song is about heroin addiction. "She don't know no lover None that I ever seen But to her that aint nothin But to me it means everything" This means EXACTLY what it says. When you are addicted to opiates, you don't feel the urge to be intimate with other people. Most opiate addicts are single and loners, and they don't get lonely like normal people do because the drug satisfies endorphins in the same way a lover does for someone who's not dependent on opiates. Heroin is a very solitary drug in that you'd rather just chill within yourself than be social. It's a warm comfort blanket the same way a lover is. To her, the fact that she doesn't have a lover means nothing to her, because the opiate is her substitute, it fulfills her and makes her feel good and so she doesn't need a lover. |

Just to add - if you google around you'll find Billy was a functional user of opiate painkillers around this time (heroin was used but not frequently). see here: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Smashing-Pumpkins-593/f/Billy.htm |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Snail Lyrics | 12 years ago |

Tommy James – Draggin' the Line Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I always thought this song was about being a hooker. "Making a living the old hard way. Taking and giving my day by day" This is sex with customers. Being a prostitute is the world's oldest profession, hence "the old hard way". "I dig snow/rain/bright sunshine" I dig bad times, good times, any times, etc. I have to in order to do this work. "Draggin the line" is fishing for customers. Like how you drag the line for fish, well here it's applied to people. "I feel fine I'm talking about peace of mind I'm gonna take my time I'm getting to good times" I'm fine, I've got peace of mind doing this rather than be all stressed out with a day job, I'll take my time getting to good times (rather than hurrying with school/work/etc). "My dog sam eats purple flowers"... could be her boyfriend who's oblivious to this whole thing and prefers romance to the casual sex of a hooker... or it could just be her pet dog... or even a sexual act.. I used to hear this song growing up in the 80s and the adults always told me it was about a hooker that's why I got that understanding of it. |
