I think the word “demons” as shown in the lines “fighting all the demons will take time” were things that we need to fight or conquer whether it might be small or large and sometimes we fail and give in so it’s like the speaker here is trying to make a promise to overcome his demons though sometimes he stumble back to his old ways. The word “angels” refers to the desire to do something, while the word “devils” refers to a thing that holding us back to do something. I think the angel was the desire to change our ways, or it could be a desire to have an honest confession to a person we loved for so long. The “devil” was of course the fear, the very thing that prevents us to act on something we wanted to do. Or for the person confessing his love for another person, it’s the fear of rejection. But I think the main message of this song is will we ever allow fear to prevent us from doing something that we thought we needed to do? Each and every one of us has fears in our lives, and sometimes we allow that fear to control us that we are not able to live life to the fullest and enjoy everything we have. I think that this song is to remind us not to allow fear to take control of everything, not to allow fear prevent us from doing the things we love, and not to allow fear to prevent us from living the life we always wanted. Most of us have taken the traditional approach of living but there are those people who are brave enough to venture into the unknown in order to find meaning to their lives, and eventually lead them to their happiness. Because honestly, most of us allow other people to take control of our lives because we are afraid of making mistakes, but this song is an honest representation that we cannot be happy unless we learn to take control of everything. And even though sometimes there is still fear in our part there is an assurance that whatever happens, or whatever tomorrow might bring, we are there, because we had live life and did not allow fear to take over. I think the main message of this song was to be brave and whatever it is that troubles us, we will not allow the fear to paralyze our desire to be happy. |

Through the Trees by Low Shoulder A broken friendship sometimes leaves us in pain and we longed to repair the ruins. The idea how the speaker would give everything just to restore their relationship was the main theme of this song. I think anybody can relate to this. Sometimes we need to sacrifice a thing in order to make someone happy, and sometimes we hurt the people we love, and in the end we feel sorry. Sometimes we blame ourselves for things that happen and we feel obliged to correct our mistakes and make up for them especially if we knew that we are the reason why our bond with a certain person was broken. I think most of us come to the point that we regret things that we do, and sometimes we were on a stage of saying “If only I could turn back the time….If only I could undo everything…..” Based on my own experience, hurting someone and asking forgiveness is not enough for you to be able to achieve inner peace. I think the one you hurt would also say the word, “I forgive you”. And the most painful part of a broken relationship as of course the moment you realize that no matter or whatever it is that you will do, things will never be the same again. To be able to gain what is lost is a difficult and painful process, and can only be achieve if both person will set aside anger, hate and pain, and let only love to flow in their hearts. I also love the idea of what the friend might do in order for his friend as reflected in the lines, “take my breath as your own, take my eyes to guide you home”. It reminds me of things that some friends had done for me and it’s just amazing to have a friend who is willing to do certain things for you and they do it because they love you. |

Run by Snow Patrol Run for me is a parting song, it spoke of leaving a person, that no matter how much you wanted to be together, it has to end, but despite of all the decisions that lead to mistakes, perhaps the one reason you did not regret was simply being able to “connect” with the person whom had understood what it’s like when you have the freedom to express what you feel with no thought or opinion of the rest. But then it has to end so you were like reassuring the person that both of you could go on with your lives separately no matter what happens and wherever place destiny may take you. “Light up, light up as if you have a choice”, this line is the highlight of the song, a message to a person to be okay, and not to be affected as with the events that occur; probably the need of having to say goodbye, and the pain coupled with it. It’s all about escaping the harsh reality of losing someone and the speaker was entering into a state of hopeless encouragement by telling the other person to light up. However, amidst of self delusion, she is aware of the unavoidable fate that lies beneath, as seen from the phrases “as if you have a choice”. Though simple it might be, the impact was still big on them and they have to deal with it. I do think that leaving someone behind is painful, and losing someone is much painful, and sometimes all we do is to “run” and flee from the hopeless situation by deluding ourselves with false encouragement. |

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane This song is full of symbolism about life and living, and of people and things around us. It talks about simplicity of life versus the complicated one. The singer probably wanted a simpler life which is somewhat opposite to his present life which is quite complicated. The song might also refer to the “past” possibly about two people, being friends and then the surrounding changes and so they did also. It could also mean the desire to reconnect to something or someone you wanted to or the want to reach out to someone or tell them that they were important and they mean everything to you. It could also mean yourself, having problems or just an odd feeling of wanting to return to a much simpler life, or yet to start everything new. “I’m getting old and I need something to rely on” refers to a feeling of tiredness one has undergoing facing the world alone and the want to have someone whom they could share their feelings. There is this person you want to reconnect yourself but it seems impossible for you to reach out to him. “So tell me when you gonna let me in?” the question of when that person will ever allow you to enter his life. “If you have a minute why don’t we go, talked about it somewhere only we know, this could be the end of everything so why don’t we go, somewhere only we know”, refers to the desire to become a part of someone’s life, the one you wanted for so long and the one you probably wanted to help, and have share of everything you have in this world. “Somewhere only we know” doesn’t have to be a certain place. It might be a feeling, a thing, a desire, and a thought which differs from each and every person. Personally, for me this song is about the desire to embrace reality as it is, like you are being tired of being alone for so long and you wanted to tell someone how lonely you are, and you noticed this person who has been lonely for so long also. You might not know his problems or the demons he was facing but you just wanted to help him, to reassure him, or just to talk to him what it feels like to be living in the world for so long and yet not having a single person to share what your feelings were like. So it’s like, since both of you have been through the same situation, it is possible that the two of you could help each other and that he is the one you needed, and you were the one he needed in his life. |

Perfect Memory by Remy Zero For me, this is a song of remembrance, a promise that you will not forget someone, and that he/she will hold a special place in your heart whatever circumstances or whenever time may takes you, you can never forget him/her. The song is about two persons growing up together, probably childhood sweethearts, and then they fell in love with each other. Their story was reflected in the song, how that love had complications for some reasons: maybe they were too young, maybe their parents were too strict or maybe their parents just didn’t want them to be lovers at all. Then it narrates the foolishness they had done as children, the times they spent, the experiences how the unaccepted relationship left the boy hurting, and how they conquer everything with their love. I love the line “summers when the money was gone you’d sing, all your little songs that meant everything to me” which reflects on how they were able to cope up with the trials of their relationship including financial matters, and it didn’t concern them much that they were able to handle it, even have to sing on it. And what I love the most is how their love has stood above all things even in death. And as he stood in the grave of the girl, he still feels her presence. She is there with him always, comforting him, and lifting his pain. And on that grave he made his promise to always remember her. Losing her was painful, and he finds himself expecting that one day, she would show up in the doorstep, but deep inside him, he knows that it will never happen, and all he could do was to remember her. And by remembering he finds comfort in his loneliness. The song for me is very beautiful and the message is very clear, “a promise that you would not forget someone, and that he/she will always hold a special place in your heart that nobody could ever replace”. |

Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World This song is about someone who has helped us cope with something awful in our lives. People with big heart who offer help and expect nothing in return and sometimes we tend to ignore them and we just don’t value their existence nor recognize their effort. And then later we realize what they had done for us, and sometimes this realization came late- the moment when they are already gone. The regret of not being able to say “thank you” to those wonderful people was reflected on this song, and though you wanted to say “thank you” now, they cannot hear you anymore. And then what was left with you was a prayer to God that the Angels would protect them. What I love about this song is the idea that we should not procrastinate on things that we could do now because we never know what tomorrow might bring. So whatever it is that you felt like you need to do, it is best to act on it now because time is so precious, and we are not the one’s holding the length of time how much are we gonna spend here on earth. I think it’s best to show our love everyday to those people we cared about, visit our grandparents, and if you love someone secretly let him/her know so that when the moment arrived when we will be taken from us we never have to regret on things undone. This song was actually from the movie of Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray (A Cinderella Story), and my sister likes this song so much that she pressed me to ask a friend of mine to download the song the first time we heard it (New Year’s Eve 2009). |

Best I Ever Had by Vertical Horizon The song actually reminds us of something or someone we had in our life once and they just can’t stay forever. It hurts when the best you ever had has “sailed away”. It shows the stages one will go through. Dealing with the other not wanting you, then not having a need for you. What probably remain in you were memories to deal with, and you know that things will never be the same again. I think the hardest part was the denial stage as mentioned in the lyrics “I don’t want you back”, telling yourself that you’re okay, trying to believe that you’re okay but honestly you are not. Maybe the meaning of this song is getting over with someone, dealing with your loss but I think the most painful is the last part of the lyrics because it makes you see how all that you can do for yourself is to be in denial especially when that’s the best you ever had-“Well it’s not so bad”. And you know that probably getting over with someone is a long process, “it may take some time to patch me up inside”, “I can’t take it so I ran away and hide” and all you can do was try to deal and carry on with it. Well, the song is painful to listen especially if it reminds you of something- a person, a thing, or a situation you been through with. This maybe one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard and I came across this song while browsing the contents of my laptop. Something about this song made me a little bit nostalgic and will always remind me of a friend because we always love to listen to this song. And whenever I hear this song I came close to remember someone whom I also consider the “best I ever had” |

Far Away by Nickelback This song is all about how you love someone no matter what, that even distance doesn’t really matter. I do think that no matter how far you maybe from the person you love, love still survives. And though it makes you lonely to think of a loved one far away from you it’s just the idea of coming home that you really looked forward to, hence the saying says, “absence makes the heart grow fonder”. This song is also about second chances. Like if you hurt your loved ones and then you just went away to escape or deal with your pain also, and then you find out that something in your life was missing, and that you being far away was a time wasted. Then the ones you left behind was patiently waiting for your return. And so you were asking for a second chance to correct your mistakes, and that you need not to be far away from them anymore. For me this song is in the point of view of a guy who loves someone but was unable to tell her how he feels, so the girl just went away somewhere, and then the guy was blaming himself not being able to tell her how he feels, hence “who was I to make you wait?”, maybe the girl loves him too and she is just waiting for him to admit it. But waiting for so long leaves the girl painful so she went away, leaving him with his secret. Then the guy realize that he loves her, so he was like lamenting of her being far away for so long, and that he loves her and miss her, and he is dreaming that she is there with him, and that he feels like dying if ever that he will not going to see her once again. The guy was probably asking second chance to be able to show to her that he loves her, and that he would do anything just to prove that love. And then the girl went home, and there conversation was summed up in this line: Guy: I wanted, I wanted you to stay, Cause I needed, I need to hear you say That I loved you, I have loved you all along And I forgive you, for being away for far too long Girl: So keep breathing cause I’m not leaving you anymore, believe it, hold on to me and never let me go And I think there love story became a happy ending. My friend loves the band Nickel back, and so as curios I am I wonder what Nickel back songs were like. While browsing on my laptop I found this song along with the others too, “If Everyone Cared”, “Someday”, “This is How You Remind Me”, “Photograph”, “Too Bad”, etc. No wonder my friend really loves this band because if you take a closer look at their theme, it’s really the reality, and anybody can relate to it. I Will Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie What I love about this song is how it defines life, death and love. The main theme is of course love though it is clear that it also spoke of death, how you view it as the end of life and if someone dedicates this song to you then you know that person loves you with all his heart and that he understands life, and accepted death as inevitable end of life. When I hear this song what comes to my mind was the kind of love that transcends time because it spoke of a loved one that died, and that he (the living person) will follow her. He doesn’t care whether it would be Heaven or Hell. I think what matters to him are the ideas that they would be together “after death” even if it means “dark” or maybe “nowhere”. So I always think that his view of death is not an ending of love, and if his lover will died, it’s just natural to feel lonely but he must not dwell on loneliness for when death comes to him, there is somehow an assurance that they will be together once again. I think most of us are afraid of death, and sometimes we find it hard to accept the idea of a loved one dying, and death especially, and the message of this song was to tell us not to be afraid of death, and accept it as a the way it should be. I also would like to point out the line “Son, fear is the heart of love” which is probably true. I think we fear of Hell, that’s why we tried to live life based on love. Because when we love, it’s just everything will follow. You could do great things because you love, and all those actions and acts of kindness done no matter how small, was of course done because we love. I love the poetry and the mystery of this song. There’s a hidden message that yields to different interpretations so I think that different experiences could also mean different interpretations. I think up to now this song remains a mystery to me, and that’s also one of the reasons why I love it so much. |

Blind by Lifehouse Some say that this song is about Jason Wade’s (Lifehouse vocalist) father because the video was really about an uncaring parent. But the lyrics of course spoke otherwise. Based on my own interpretation it has something to do with loving someone for years yet that love was not returned nor recognized. And for some reasons it left a person broken inside or something inside of him has died. Semicz said that he fell in love with a girl eight years ago from the first time he met her but he know that he cannot have her. His reasons why were not stated. For me, this is a story about a boy who met someone when he was fourteen and fell in love for the first time. For some reasons he were not able to let out his feelings for the girl. Possibly the two of them have seen each other very often and so the feeling grows, he dropped subtle hints hoping that he would be noticed but it results to nothing. He tried to move on burying his feelings only to find out that there’s a hole inside of him, something that cost his life actually, and then he’s stranded on that stage wherein moving on is impossible. Let’s say that the boy had grown into a man then he discovered that after all the years that had gone by, he feels the same but still he wasn’t able to tell her how he feels, the real honest confession of love that he carries with him. I think what he was doing was just to keep everything secret and lament on how his love for her actually made him succumb to desperation. This song shows how painful unrequited love can be especially when you were young and even if at such age you know that your love was true. It also shows how it can affect the lives of people and those who were not able to move on were affected for the rest of their lives. And when you listen to the song, you could hear the lines “couldn’t make you see it, that I love you more than you will ever know, when part of me died when I let you go”, wherein there is this strength in Jason Wade’s voice that probably reflects anguish and pain. It’s like he was stressing that line, the highlight of the song. I would also like to point out the lines “when my love for you is blind” and “that my love for you was blind” which refers to the past (when) and the present (that) and shows that his feeling did not change after all the years that has gone by. I came to know this song thru a certain friend of mine which actually left me wondering if the story has something to do with him or had actually happen to him. The lyrics have an effect of me because I find it very straightforward and obviously I can relate to it one way or the other. I find this song very cute, honestly. I imagine myself writing a story about that boy, because I could sympathize and my heart pour out with those people especially guys who had been in pain because of love. I couldn’t help but remember someone I used to know and when I hear this song I try to look back and so the story is like playing on my mind over and over again. I mean I find it rare when guys love truly because we sometimes tend to generalize “men as playboy” but as I close to finding the meaning of the song I believe that a guy can love like a girl, and maybe even more than that. And when it comes to love I think they tend to be more affected that we do. Honestly, every time I listen to thing song, I think of a person who introduced me to this song in the first place, and unfortunately it’s who the subject of the song that makes me thinks of. |
