There was this moment back when I was at university, I was walking around listening to Nowhere through my headphones and suddenly the last track “Vapour Trail” comes on. Suddenly everything goes into slow motion. I see people wipe the sweat from their forehead slowly, I see girls blinking slowly and everyone talking and laughing — slowly. There are those epiphanies you have in life that you sometimes can’t explain — and I guess the best explanation I could give for the one I was having at the moment was Ride. You see, I think “Vapour Trail” is about knowing something’s going to end (in this case probably a relationship) and not minding it. As I looked at everyone walking about their lives and the sun slowly setting — I realised that I don’t mind mortality. I’m going to end, we’re all going to end, at some point and all that will be left when we’re gone is a vapour trail of our experiences that perhaps someone, if we’re lucky, will try to hold on to. |
