It's really unimportant whether he's gay. I'm gay, and suddenly, listening to the song, I could hear it coming from the mouth of my best friend since forever, who's straight. We were always aware of the great love between us, a love which could (ehm, tragically) never be fulfilled. This could be referred to by the heartbreaking line "But you are life I needed all along". The beauty I find in this song, is that it eventually ascends its title. No idea who's singing it to whom, and it doesn't really matter. It's my best friend and my longest ongoing love, singing it to me, and it soothes my heart. (If you insist, according to that one sufjan isn't gay, but possibly sings this to someone who is) |
