The more I listen to this song the more I love it, and the more I am confused about the meaning. Of course the obvious meaning is that it's about the singer cheating on Josie. However, and this may be me projecting my own experiences onto the song, I have always thought that it is less about cheating, and more about the temptation to cheat. In particular the line "Another shoulder to cry upon" after they have supposedly parted, has always made me believe that he did not end up cheating on Josie, for whatever reason, perhaps simply from not being able to go through with it, and instead settled for emotional comfort rather than physical. I believe that in the lines: "Try to stop my hands from shaking But something in my minds not making sense It's been a while since we were all alone I can't hide the way I'm feeling" He gets to the point of almost going through with the act but is stopped at the end and leaves deciding instead that she will be "another shoulder to cry upon" and that while he wants to use her love, he doesn't wish to loose it. As for the idea that there he is with a girl too young for him, I don't support this theory, I think it simply means that the girl he is speaking too is older and that he has always had a crush on her. Though this is simply my opinion and as I say could be me projecting personal experiences, regardless this is a brilliant song. |
