We're always standing on a hill in our mountain of dreams. I listen to this song when I want to remind myself going after them isn't as hard as it seems.
If I was about 20 in the late 1960's, my dream would be going to california by plane as well. That was where people went to find love and happiness, a chance to live differently than their parents. |

Plant was singing about the woman he loved with all his soul, would've done anything for, but was not met with the same kind of love. She enjoyed hurting him, and playing tricks on his mind, leaving him dazed and confused, scarred from the wounds she left. All he ever wanted was a pure woman that would love him as much as he loved her. At least, thats what i get from the song, and well, Led Zeppelin as a whole basically. We all want a love that is equal and pure. |

This song is almost written like a warning. The music paints kind of a dark, winding imagery, while the lyrics speak of how important it is to keep true to your word and not burn bridges. It reminds me that if someone is dishonest and disloyal as a young man, they will be very alone and empty at the end of it all. So, if you're fortunate enough to have someone in your life, a friend, then appreciate the love that you have. One day you may find yourself without it... |

And well you could also look at it like patrick said. The lyrics can be interpreted so many different ways. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain |

The lyrics in this song are meant to capture a certain mood. He describes the bridge, his shelter, as leaking, making his foundation a little rocky. His life was not perfect. "And the animals I've trapt have all become my pets." says to me that Kurt became attached to people and things very easily and that he was capable of giving a lot of love. He lives off of the drippings from the ceiling and the grass. He doesn't need much to live, he is somewhat of a minimalist. I also think he cleverly disguised it as a drug reference, grass (marijuana) and drippings from the ceiling of the roof (any powdered drug drips from the roof of your mouth). His minimalist attitude is present in the line about living off of fish. He would live off of one thing forever, if it meant less pain for everybody and everything else. And the chorus to me feels as though he is looking at his life and existence in general and finding beauty in it's ways. He's admitting that there really is something in the way that it all works. The great mystery.
This is one of his more personal songs, and definitely one of his best in my opinion! |
