Jason Isbell – Hope the High Road Lyrics 7 years ago
When this came out in 2017 I always took it as a way to overcome the exhaustion with all things political and negative and society in general just being crappy in 2016 (Last year was a son of a bitch...). Jason is saying that he understands (I know you’re tired...) but that he personally isn’t going to go there and let all of that overwhelm him. He’s going to take the high road and he hopes you do as well

Jason Isbell – Chaos and Clothes Lyrics 7 years ago
I believe that this song is about his friend Ryan Adams going through a divorce with Mandy Moore. There’s lots of references to Ryan (Monsters, Black Metal t-shirts, Ferris wheel) and his struggles with sobriety (you’ve got the past on your breath my friend) it seems like Jason is telling him to be careful lest he go down a dangerous path of self-destruction, something that a friend wouldn’t want for a friend

Jason Isbell – Cover Me Up Lyrics 7 years ago
Heard Jason at a show a bit of the story. He said that when he first wrote it that he was afraid to play it for Amanda Shires because she would immediately know that he was in love with her. Well he did play it for her and now they’re married and have a daughter. And it’s a powerful and beautiful song.

Drive-By Truckers – Goddamn Lonely Love Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't know that there's a definite answer to this one, but I'll give it my take. It's certainly a beautiful song.

He's found success in life moneywise, career or whatever, but it doesn't help him find happiness, and he's drinking to quell that sadness. He knows he'll never get back to where he was truly happy, before he found success, so that just adds to his sadness and drinking.

the next part is iffy, but I think that maybe she cheated on him and got pregnant. He knows it was his fault somehow that she strayed, and tells her not to be ashamed. He also knows that its completely over, it'll never be the way it was in Texarkana.

So he's back to drinking. He had something good and f'd it up chasing some money/success. But that's no substitute, so here he is, rich and lonely and drinking. He could search for another girl, but doesn't want to deal with the pain again. He's content to let the misery and alcohol swallow him whole, soul and all.

"I got 350 heads on a 305 engine
I get ten miles to the gallon
I ain't got no good intentions"

'Cause how F-ing awesome is THAT? Cooley always seems to save the best lines for the end and this ones no different. Sums up the whole damn song perfectly. Every bit of teenage angst in one line.

Drive-By Truckers – Eyes Like Glue Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm a Dad to a young one, and I'm sure any other Dad out there could tell you how accurate this is to how you feel so inadequate, so imperfect in comparison to the blank slate in front of you. Very moving song.

Drive-By Truckers – Do It Yourself Lyrics 13 years ago
The companion song to When the Pin Hits the Shell. Cooley and Hood had a mutual friend commit suicide and both wrote a song about it on from different perspectives that are on Decoration Day. They both have a kind of you don't get my sympathy vibe to them, just different vibe in the music really.

Drive-By Truckers – Birthday Boy Lyrics 13 years ago
Have to agree with Weasel that the lyrics are off here, but like usual Cooley saves the best lines for the end (which are incorrect as listed above). It's about that girl who everyone thought was so promising when she was young, but life caught up to her. This is a somewhat recurrent theme in Cooley's songs. I love the comparison to young women beauties to storms that come through fast but leave a mark.

"Pretty girls from the smallest towns, get remembered like storms and droughts that old men talk about for years to come
I guess that's why they give us names, so a few old men can say they saw us rain/reign when we were young. "

I also love that the last line starts the cycle over again, as the stripper/prostitute has moved on to the next customer - just highlighting the hopelessness of her life.

Drive-By Truckers – Pulaski Lyrics 13 years ago
I was thinking the same thing. She kills herself in the end, another victim of the way LA chews up and spits out dreams every single day. The song is actually eerily similar to the plot line from the movie Mulholland Drive.
