My theory about this song is that it's Pearl contemplating life and everything while being held captive by Wilhelm Ryan. Ryan kept her in a glass box and used all kinds of tactics to try to break her emotionally, and this song illustrates her slowly slipping into madness "I accept that you chose to forget the horrid thing you made of me, my dear" Pearl is made to believe that Leonard is to blame for her being captured and that he has forgotten about her. She doesn't accept it at first, but the longer she's held captive, the more she starts to believe it. "I've given up on all I've loved for An honest moment of clarity Well I need to feel alright, please let me breathe" On one point, Pearl wants out so badly that she wishes that anyone could take her place, even if it were Leonard or Joseph. She doesn't care if one of her loved ones had to suffer, she would switch places with them in a heartbeat. "All that I am and never again Will I believe the same old story" This could be about her resisting and disagreeing the things Wilhelm Ryan tells her about Leonard. She keeps telling herself that she won't believe him, even though deep down she does. "There's no understanding in miracles When the worst, it always comes true" This is the most telling part in my opinion. All through the story, Pearl mentions quite a bit about not believing in miracles, especially after Joseph was killed. The situation she is in just strengths her belief. These are all just my opinions, of course. This might not be the actual interpretation of the song, but that is how I see it. But I definitely suggest reading the "Year of the Black Rainbow" novel if youre a big Coheed and Cambria fan and you can find it on eBay or Amazon. It is fantastic! |
